Giles gives an injury update on Tom Smith

Head Coach and Cricket Director Ashley Giles has said Tom Smith is ahead of schedule as he returns from a back injury which resulted the all-rounder to miss all but one game in the 2015 season.

“Tom is going really well, but it is the same line from us – softly softly. We need to make sure when he comes back, he comes back right.

“He is batting fully, facing bowlers, bowling machine, pulling, sweeping and he’s starting to bowl through as well.

“He hasn’t bowled at any batsmen yet, but he’s been running through and doing his drills which is great. He’s probably further ahead than where we thought he would be.

“So far, there haven’t been any complications or set backs which is really good for him. It’s obviously been an incredibly frustrating time for him and it’s fantastic for us.

“To have someone like him back in the fold, even in training with his experience, is really valuable.

“We’ll take our time with him and make sure he’s absolutely ready.”

Lancashire is back in the top flight of the County Championship in 2016 and will be defending the NatWest T20 Blast title as well as searching for glory in the Royal London One-Day Cup.
