Giles praises Buttler show at New Road

Lancashire Head Coach and Cricket Director Ashley Giles heaped praise on Jos Buttler after his stunning innings last night at New Road in the NatWest T20 Blast.

The England wicket keeper hit 57 off just 21 balls - Lancashire's fastest ever half century in any format.

“He played beautifully. He now opens the batting as well. What doesn’t he do? I asked him on the way down if he wanted to do it. He’s done it for England in the week, so who are we to stop him.

“He can basically pick where he wants to bat. He’s just high, high quality.

“To strike some of those balls that he did there, there’s not many, if any, in world cricket who can do that. He’s just different.

Speaking on Buttler's injury picked up whilst wicket-keeping to Luis Reece, “We’ll get it x-rayed and see where he is. It’s not ideal,” said Giles. “He did make comment that he doesn’t use his top hand anyway!

"I don’t want to speculate, but it’s a nasty knock. Once we get it x-rayed, we’ll know.

Giles wants his side to use the win at New Road on Friday night as momentum going into the final four games of the group stages.

“We just need to keep winning now. It’s been fits and starts throughout the competition. We’ve beaten this side twice, and they are a really good T20 side.

“Then we’ve lost games we feel we should have won. Yorkshire last week was a prime example.

“I said to the guys before the game ‘It’s a knockout now and we’ve got to play as if it’s last 16’.

“We have to keep knocking them down. One brick’s gone, we just have to keep going.

The former England spinner also had praise for Lancashire batsman Karl Brown, who guided Giles' side home with an invaluable unbeaten 61 at New Road as Lightning cruised to a seven wicket victory.

“Browny played very well. His one-day and T20 record for Lancs is outstanding. He’s probably not fired as much as he’d have liked this competition, but it was good timing here.”
