Giles reflects on Day Three at the Kia Oval

Ashley Giles has reflected on Lancashire's collapse after tea at the Kia Oval as the Red Rose look set for a resounding defeat in the Specsavers County Championship against Surrey.

“I thought we played incredibly well to get to the point we were at at tea,” said Giles.

“Procter and Petersen were building a really good partnership, but when you lose one wicket you’re always at risk of losing a clutch, and that’s what we did.

“We have been outplayed in the match. Winning the toss was probably our best moment if I’m not being too harsh.

“We have played ok, but we can’t afford to play just ok against good teams. They’ve played much better cricket than us.

“What we’ve done well, when we’ve done well, is build partnerships. In this innings alone, we’ve had a 49, a 40 and then a 78 partnership. We’ve really got to convert those into 150s.

“It looks an easier wicket to play on, but it’s going to be tough against a good bowling attack if you lose wickets.

“Some of our cricket has been a bit soft, softer than it has been in the past. We’ve got a bit of a wake up call here because there’s a lot of cricket to be played and it’s a very tight division. At the moment, we are far from safe.

“We’ve got to keep an eye on that because it is that tight. It’s a concern.

“So often we’re talking about starting games slowly. 280 on that wicket, we should have got a few more. Then, I don’t think we bowled that well. It’s been one of our least consistent performances with the ball.

“I keeping saying it in defence of the team and all of us, we’re a developing team. We have a lot of young players learning their trade.

“But it’s a harsh, performance environment, and you are not going to go on playing if you don’t put in the performances.

“Against a good team, if you give them a chance, they will bully you. But like any form of bully, if you stand up to them and you’re tough, it’s who can stand up longest. We haven’t done that here.”
