Haseeb Hameed set for England debut in First Test

Lancashire’s teenage opening batsmen, Haseeb Hameed, will make his England debut against India in the First Test in Rajkot on Wednesday.

England Captain, Alastair Cook said, “It’s a very exciting day for a young guy who’s impressed everyone so far on this trip.

“You often wonder with a 19-year-old coming on this trip whether he’d be overawed by it and he hasn’t been at all, he’s looked really good in the nets, the way he’s trained and gone about his business.”

The Bolton born batsmen will become only the second teenager to play for England in Test cricket since 1949.

Cook said, “It’s obviously a very special day, and to pick someone so young as well,” adding, “he’s more experienced than his 19 years suggest.

“Talking to Ashley Giles, talking to selectors, people who are a very good judge of a player, he’s one of those natural run scorers, all through his age groups, every team he’s played in and whatever standard, he’s scored runs.”

In August, Hameed became the first Lancastrian to score centuries in both innings of a County Championship match against rivals Yorkshire.

It was part of a season in which he scored 1,129 runs at an average of 52, earning himself a call up to the Test squad for the Bangladesh tour last month.

“It’s maybe come a year earlier than he would have thought, that’s probably the way he’s developed quickly,” said Cook.

Yorkshire’s Gary Balance is due to make way, with Ben Duckett dropping down the order to accommodate the young Lancashire opener.

The England captain wished the youngster well in joining him at the top of the order.

“He should be very proud and hopefully he can do well.”
