Smith continues good form but Second XI beaten
Tom Smith continued his excellent form with the bat but Lancashire Second XI were narrowly beaten by Northants in their One-Day Trophy match at Wantage Road yesterday.
After winning the toss, Captain Stephen Parry elected to bowl first and Lancashire made a good start as George Edwards and Jordan Clark opened the bowling for the visitors.
The hosts lost wickets on a regular basis but Simon Branston (48) formed the basis of the Northants innings on a tricky wicket for batting. Northamptonshire finished their 50 overs on 208/9.
Arron Lilley was the star of the Lancashire bowlers taking 4/31 from eight overs, whilst Matthew Parkinson took 2/30. Griffiths (1/36), Parry (1/38) and Clark (1/17) also took a wicket apiece for the visitors.
In reply, Lancashire Luis Reece (11) opened the batting with Brooke Guest (17) but both fell cheaply. Jordan Clark and Tom Smith came to the crease and helped rebuild the innings for the Red Rose side.
Clark (44) departed and the Lancashire innings collapsed with the visitors finding themselves 176/8.
Tom Smith played a terrific innings for his side as he continued his good form with the bat and Matthew Parkinson (16) chipped in with an important contribution for his side as Lancashire edged closer to the target of 209.
Gavin Griffiths was the last man to the crease, but with just four runs to win, Smith (72) departed and Northants claimed a narrow victory at Wantage Road.
Lancashire take on Northants at Desborough Cricket Club in a three-day Championship clash, starting today.
