Alex Davies opens up on his return from injury

Lancashire wicket keeper batsman Alex Davies believes that last year’s injury will do him good in the long-run as the 23 year-old prepares to fly to Australia with the England Lions.

The Lancashire batsman, who hit over 1,000 First Class runs this season including three centuries, was named in the England Lions squad for the first time last month.

“Having the year away has really re-focused me and it reminds you what you really want.

"It was so hard at the time. Before the operation, I really didn’t know whether I was going to play cricket again.

"There is a point where you’ve got to take a step back and say to yourself ‘it’s not end of of the world and there is more to life than cricket’.

“In many ways, I’m actually glad it happened and it was a good thing to happen to me, if that makes any sense at all.

“There has been a lot of hard that’s gone into it, not just from me, but behind the scenes from the medial team and I’d like to thank them.

“Dave Roberts, Sam Byrne and Tom Webster have all been amazing for me. Without those guys, I wouldn’t have had this opportunity to go with the England Lions this winter.

“It’s widely talked about around the country that Lancashire have got the best medical staff on the circuit. I couldn’t have done it without them.

“They have helped me so much, but it was almost more mentally than physically. I think 70% was mental and the rest physical. They put together a programme for me and you’ve just got to trust what they tell you to do.

"I always believed that I was going to come back stronger and that I was going to have a good season this year and luckily it’s gone that way.”

Davies had his breakthrough year in 2015 where he finished the season with a NatWest T20 Blast winner medal round his neck, having been named Man of the Match in the final against Northamptonshire, but the young batsman looking back believes he was underachieving.

“I just think that I was underachieving a little bit in the years before my injury and, although I had a decent year in 2015, I wasn’t scoring the sheer volume of runs that I would have liked.

“As soon as I was able to walk and swim again, every step along the way I was thinking about getting the phone call, that I got a couple of weeks ago from James Whitaker, telling me that I’d been selected for the Lions.

Davies hit three centuries in 2017, including his maiden First Class ton in the opening game away at Essex, but his favourite knock wasn’t any of them.

“The knock at Hampshire was my best knock by far. We were behind in the game and I picked a way of playing that I thought was going to score me runs. It was turning, they’d put sand on it so it was really tough so I wanted to capitalise when I faced the seamers. It came off that day and I had a bit luck along the way.

“It’s just important to not get carried away with it. The next game I nicked off against Essex third ball so you can’t get too high when things are going well and too low with the bad scores.”
