Jonny Bairstow hits maiden century as England take early series lead

England swept the West Indies aside in the first Royal London One-Day International of the series as the Three Lions secured a seven-wicket victory at Emirates Old Trafford thanks to Jonny Bairstow’s brilliant century.

Bairstow completed his unbeaten century in ODI cricket for the first time in his career in what felt like unfinished business following his dismissal at Emirates Old Trafford just six weeks earlier, where he left the field on 99 runs against South Africa.

The Yorkshire man helped England chase down the West Indies score of 204-9 following a below par innings from the visitors who boasted a strong batting attack with Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels returning to the side.

The heavy defeat confirmed that the West Indies will no longer be granted with automatic qualification for the Cricket World Cup in 2019 and will be forced to qualify via a tournament early next year.

The second Royal London One-Day International between England and the West Indies will take place on Thursday 21 September at Trent Bridge.

What they said:

Man of the match Jonny Bairstow: "It's been a long time coming, I made by debut so long ago. It's been a rollercoaster in ODIs, but hopefully it's a stepping block for things to come.

"I opened for Yorkshire at the start of the year and it's gone from there. I like to hope my game lends itself to the middle order and to opening. Wherever the captain wants me to bat, I like to think that I'm adaptable."

England captain Eoin Morgan: "I thought we came back really well, it didn't take us long to adapt to conditions with the slower balls and variations, leaving us with a relatively not-too-hard target to chase down. Joe Root doesn't drop many catches and you've just got to try to create more chances. The bowling unit put in a really good benchmark for the start of the series."
