Chris Gayle marks his return with a victory for the West Indies

Making his long awaited return to the West Indies international side, Chris Gayle helped the visitors to a 21 run victory at Emirates Riverside as the hosts were bowled out for 155.

Living up to his name, Chris Gayle smashed the ball around the ground superb precision to bring up his 40 off 21 balls, before he was carelessly run out by Jason Roy – much to the delight of the England camp.

However it was Carlos Brathwaite who was once again the thorn in England’s side, but this time with the ball. After 531 days since Brathwaite hit Ben Stokes for four consecutive sixes in that ICC World T20 final heartache, he took 3 wickets for just 20 runs – including the final wicket which saw England once again lose to the West Indies in T20 cricket.

Focus now turns to Emirates Old Trafford as the start of the One-Day series kicks off in Manchester on Tuesday 19 September.

What the Captains said

England captain Eoin Morgan, speaking on Test Match Special: "Given we were chasing 170-odd on a wicket that was coming on nicely, we let ourselves down with the bat.

"It's disappointing because we have the capabilities of chasing down a score like that.

"Plunkett and Rashid were outstanding; it was an amazing effort to get us back in the game."

West Indies captain Carlos Brathwaite on Sky Sports: "This was probably the more challenging of our recent wins. Conditions were soft and slippery, the umpires were close to calling it off."
