Hameed hits century for Second XI on opening day

Haseeb Hameed struck a fine century as Lancashire’s Second XI took control on the first day against MCC Young Cricketer’s at Urmston.

The 20-year-old, who enjoyed an outstanding 2016 for the Red Rose before making a promising Test debut for England in India, made 110 as Lancashire declared on 317/9.

The opener hit 17 fours in a 217-ball stay, initially helping Lancashire overcome the early loss of Rob Jones in a partnership of 83 with Calum Turner.

Luke Procter fell with the total at 112, but Bolton-born Hameed doubled the score and moved to his ton in the company of the veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul before falling to Fynn Hudson-Prentice just before tea.

Chanderpaul was dismissed just after completing his half-century, and the eventual declaration allowed Lancashire’s bowlers three overs before the close. They were safely negotiated by MCC’s openers to finish on 18/0, but Hameed’s innings will stand him in good stead for Lancashire’s return to four-day Championship action against Hampshire on 6 August.
