LCB Women top T20 Division 1 with two games remaining
LCB Women will head into the final round of fixtures in the NatWest Women’s County T20 Division 1 with a 4 point lead over the chasing pack after winning one and losing one game on their trip down to the Edgbaston Foundation Ground on 16 July.
LCB Women defeat Birmingham Bears Women by 1 run
The first game of the day saw them face a Birmingham side unbeaten in all competitions this season, and sitting just above them on run rate. Lancashire were asked to bat first in overcast conditions and were given a great start as Evelyn Jones and Emma Lamb added 55 for the first before Evelyn was bowled for a fine 30. Emma went on to provide the backbone of the innings with a superb 54 off 49 balls before she was dismissed with the score at 110. The final push for runs was stopped though, as Russell finished the innings off with a hat trick – all clean bowled to leave the final total on 120-8.
Birmingham Bears Women got off to a flying start through Jones and Kelly who quickly scored 58 for the first wicket before Natalie Brown took two quick wickets. Kelly continued to dominate the innings reaching a fine 50 as they reached 106-4 with 4 overs to go. Somehow the Lancashire girls summoned up one last effort and incredibly grabbed the 6 remaining wickets in 3.3 overs for 13 runs to clinch a thriller by just one run. Skipper Megan Fairclough with a brilliant run out and 2 wickets led the way with Rachel Dickinson taking 2/3 to secure a remarkable win.
Scorecard -> LCB Women won by 1 run
LCB Women lose to Sussex Women by 12 runs
Sussex won the toss and decided to bat first in the 2nd game and like Birmingham got away to a rapid start before the Lancashire girls started to claw back. Sussex’s Scholfield and Adams scored 69 before Scholfield became the first of 3 wickets in a spell of 3/14 from skipper Fairclough, which helped slow down the scoring rate considerably. Freeborn battled on to make an unbeaten 26 and Sussex ended their innings on 119-8.
Jones and Lamb got the reply off to a steady start before Jones fell with the score on 25. Another wicket fell quickly before Brown played a rapid cameo only to be bowled just when she looked like swinging the game Lancashire’s way. Lamb had continued to bat well and still looked capable of winning the game when she was well caught on the boundary for a fine 44 with the score on 87. Jess Couser tried hard to keep up the momentum with a run a ball 14 but in the end the target proved just too much for Lancs and were restricted to 107-7 and a 12 run defeat.
Scorecard -> Sussex Women won by 12 runs
The final round of fixtures take place on July 30th when LCB Women travel down to Banstead CC in Surrey to take on Surrey and Yorkshire with a great chance of lifting the first silverware of the season if results go their way.
