Sam Oldham and George Burrows star for Second XI
Academy batsman Sam Oldham and Lancashire U19's George Burrows starred as the Second XI thrashed a strong Leicestershire side by 137 runs yesterday.
The Red Rose side batted first with Rob Jones and Calum Turner opening up for Lancashire and had added 49 for the first wicket when Turner (34) was caught at the wicket by Lewis Hill off the bowling of Wells.
Josh Bohannon joined Jones, and the score had reached 76 when Bohannon (5) went caught at mid-wicket by Aadil Ali, again off Wells. With his next delivery Wells pinned Danny Lamb (0) in front first ball
With a further six runs added to the total Brooke Guest (0) was bowled by Wells, Lancashire in a bit of trouble on 82-4 from 19.4 overs. Lancashire then rebuilt their innings thanks to a partnership between Jones and Oldham.
Jones half-century came up (7x4) from 51 balls with the same delivery that Lancashire reached their 100 after 23.4 overs. Jones and Oldham built a 50 partnership from 86 balls. When the score had reached 134, the durable Jones departed caught by ‘keeper Hill off Neil Dexter, Lancashire 134-5 from 34.3. George Lavelle (1) went bowled by Rob Sayer, leaving the Red Rose men on 139-6 from 37.1.
Skipper Simon Kerrigan joined Oldham and the pair began to have a dart at the bowling. They brought up their 50 partnership from 47 balls with the score on 190-6 from 44.4. Oldham went to his 50 (5x4) from 72 balls with the score on 196-6 from 45.4. The pair had added 82 for the seventh wicket when Kerrigan (42 from 32 balls) went caught at extra cover by Dexter off Wells, giving Wells a 5-for.
Lancashire closed their 50 overs on 246-8 with Sam Oldham undefeated on 76 from 83 balls.
Aadil Ali and Cameron Delport opened up for Leicestershire and the pair put on a 50 partnership from 58 balls.
Ali (20) got a leading edge and one popped up to Jones at mid-wicket off the first ball bowled by Burrows, who was steaming in from the Pavilion End.
Dexter (0) went caught and bowled by Josh Bohannon with six runs added to the score, and seven runs later, Mark Cosgrove (1) chopped one on from Burrows with the hosts 65-3 from 12.1.
Delport went to his 50 (7x4,1x6) from 40 balls with the score on 80-3 from 14.1. Delport (61 from 47 balls) went caught at mid-wicket, from a ball that appeared to stop on him, by Kerrigan off Burrows, County 92-4 from 16.1.
That became 92-5 when Tom Wells (0) went first ball, bowled by Burrows. Just afterwards the players left the field for rain/hail with the score on 94-5 from 17 overs.
Lancashire then wrapped the innings up in just four overs, Sayer (1) went caught behind, down the leg side, by Lavelle off Lamb. Hill (10) went caught on the deep mid wicket boundary by Brooke Guest off Burrows.
Former Lancashire bowler Gavin Griffiths went first ball, bowled, by Burrows, and James Sykes was trapped in front first ball.
Richard Jones was unable to bat so Leicestershire were effectively all out for 109 from 21 overs. George Burrows returning very impressive figures of 7-36 from six overs.
