West Indies v England, First ODI Review

West Indies v England, First ODI Review

England strike first in their tour of the West Indies after beating the hosts by 45 runs in the opening ODI in Antigua.

The Three Lions, who are preparing for the ICC Champions Trophy later this year, got off to the perfect start during their West Indies tour, with Eoin Morgan putting in a captains performance to reach his century and secure England’s first win of the series.

Noticeable innings from Eoin Morgan (107), Ben Stokes (55) and Sam Billings (52) helped England secure an innings total of 296-6 after new England Test captain Joe Root (4) and Jason Roy (13) struggled to make an impact.

There may have been cause for concern in the early stages of England innings, with Root and Roy’s dismissal leaving the Three Lions on 29-2, but the tourists showcased their superiority with an outstanding team performance to take the lead.

Excellent bowling performances from Chris Woakes and Liam Plunkett counteracted the West Indies batting prowess as England look three quick wicket in the early stages of the hosts innings to leave them on 39-3. While spectacular innings from Jason Mohammed (72) and Jonathan Carter (52) made for an entertaining fixture, with the hosts matching England’s runs per over, it was the West Indies lower batting order that ensured the hosts demise whose last four wickets fell for 41.

The West Indies finished on 251 all out as England won by 45 runs and lead the series 1-0.

The captains performance

England’s white-ball cricket captain came under much scrutiny following his omission from the Bangladesh tour last year, and England’s whitewash against India in the ODI.

However Eoin Morgan’s 10th ODI hundred has no doubt given his doubters room for reconsideration after his experienced and measured performance against the hosts. Punishing spinners Ashley Nurse and Devendra Bishoo and consistently reaching the boundary to smash 107 runs off just 116 balls.
