Davies hits stunning century in North warm-up game

Lancashire wicket keeper hits century in Barbados

Alex Davies believes his North team are in great shape to improve on last year’s showing against the South, after making a sparkling unbeaten century in their warm-up game against Northamptonshire in Barbados on Thursday.

The Lancashire wicketkeeper raced to 50 in 26 balls, and 100 in 87, before being retired out by coach Paul Collingwood on 127 from 106, to allow some more of the North batsmen to spend some time in the middle.

“We’re pretty excited,” said Davies, who is one of four Lancashire players who seem to be relishing the leadership of Collingwood and Captain Steven Mullaney, another Lancastrian now settled at Nottinghamshire.

“It’s a great bunch, yeah. I think northerners always get on with northerners. We’ve got a bit of experience in there mixed with some funny, good youngsters.

“That was a great preparation for us. With the ball everyone chipped in and there were some good performances, so the bowling side is looking good, and it was nice to get off to a good start when we batted.

"The pitch was good so me and Clarkey tried to give it a whack up top, and I got a few out of the middle.”

The 23-year-old had been feeling in good touch throughout the Lions’ one-day series in Antigua, and had been frustrated when dismissed for 38 and 46 in the last two matches.

“It’s funny, I know I’m playing well and I’ve just been building up to something like this,” he added. “Everything fell into place today.”

Matt Parkinson and Richard Gleeson were rested but both are expected to play when the serious business starts on Sunday – as is Nick Gubbins, the Middlesex opener who was the only member of the South squad not to play, as they received permission from their local opponents to play 12.
