Hartley excited to play for Lancashire Thunder
There’s no place like home for Alex Hartley who is returning to her native Lancashire for the third season of Kia Super League this summer, having played for the last two years with the Surrey Stars.
“To go back home and represent the Red Rose is just so exciting,” said the 24-year-old left-arm spinner from Blackburn, who is currently preparing for a trip to India with the England women’s team.
“Surrey was amazing and I loved playing for the Stars, but it was just so far away from where I live at the minute.”
Hartley played a big part in Surrey’s success in the 2017 Kia Super League as they reached Finals Day at the 1st Central County Ground in Hove – a performance that Thunder will be aiming to emulate in this year’s expanded competition, when they play home games at Southport, Liverpool and Blackpool, as well as two at Emirates Old Trafford.
She will link up with fellow England spinners Danni Hazell and Sophie Ecclestone at Thunder – all three are on the India tour, as well as seamer Kate Cross.
“To have three of the four spinners in one team, it makes sense, but then it doesn’t make sense,” she reflected with a smile.
“We all play different roles. Hazell opens the bowling, Eccles (Sophie Ecclestone) bowls in the powerplay and I bowl in the middle so it’s actually a good opportunity for all three of us to work together and learn for when we play international cricket together.”
Hartley was a member of England’s famous World Cup win at Lord’s last summer – she has recently been negotiating hard with her parents over display rights for her shirt from the final, having finally had it framed.
“There are a few arguments,” she joked. “Mum wants it in her office, Dad wants it in his office, but I think I’m going to have it in my house!
“It’s amazing, you always dream of playing cricket and dream of inspiring the next generation of players. To have done that, it’s very exciting to see where we can go in the next year.”
