Jones century not enough for Second XI

Jones century not enough for Second XI

An unbeaten second innings century by Rob Jones wasn’t enough for Lancashire’s Second XI, who were beaten by three wickets on a frantic final day of their friendly against Yorkshire at Emirates Old Trafford.

After the visitors had declared their first innings on 146/7, still trailing by 52, Lancashire openers Jones, who was fresh from his 90 the previous day, and Karl Brown set about posting a total that would set-up a final day run chase.

Brown (7) was dismissed early in the morning session, bowled by Ed Barnes, to bring Danny Lamb to the crease, as he and Jones moved the lead beyond 100, with Lamb striking two sixes before he was caught for 29.

Lancashire lost a flurry of quick wickets in the middle order before Toby Lester (27*) joined Jones at the crease. The pair put on 55 in a timely fashion, as the declaration came in mid-afternoon with the score 197/6, leaving Jones unbeaten on 104 from 137 balls, striking 16 fours and a six.

Yorkshire required 250 for victory and made a good start with the bat, before Tom Kohler-Cadmore (20) was caught behind off the bowling of Tom Lawson (1-21), to make it 41/1 in the eighth over.

His opening partner Jonathan Tattersall, assisted by Azeem Rafiq (49) and Matthew Waite (37), would go on to play a match winning knock of 78 from 123 balls, despite George Balderson taking three middle order wickets to keep the Red Rose in the hunt.

Lancashire were given hope when Tattersall was eventually dismissed by Lamb (1-33) with the visitors still requiring 36 to win with four wickets remaining, but George Hill (31*) and Karl Carver (10*) would steer Yorkshire to victory in the final hour.
