England v West Indies

Tuesday 19 September 2017

On a night that was billed as the big return of Chris Gayle in One-Day International cricket, it was Jonny Bairstow who stole the show top scoring with a ODI career-best 100 not out as England cruised to a seven wicket victory.

In truth, the visitors were no match for the hosts who claimed the victory with 11 overs to spare in what felt like unfinished business for Bairstow who managed 99 a couple weeks earlier in Manchester against South Africa.

England v Sri Lanka

Wednesday 28 May 2014

After a crushing defeat in the opening ODI against Sri Lanka at Chester-le-Street, England wasted no time in getting back to business with a spectacular bowling display to dismiss the visitors for just 67 in just 24 overs.

The hosts then needed just 12.1 overs to reach Sri Lanka’s score to level the series in one of the shortest ODIs ever played in Manchester.

England v South Africa

Saturday 23 May 1998

England suffered a crushing 32-run defeat against South Africa at the home of Lancashire Cricket Club when both sides met in 1998.

The Three Lions got off to a flying start, taking two wickets by the middle of the sixth over. However South Africa’s strength in depth saw the visitors recover to reach 226-9 by the end of the innings.

In the early exchanges of England’s innings, the hosts looked in total control – but the departure of opening pair Brown and Knight saw the remaining wickets fall in quick succession after a fantastic bowling display from South Africa.

England were bowled out for just 194 by the 46th over…32-runs shy of South Africa’s total.

England v West Indies

Thursday 31 May 1984

One of England’s most devastating defeats in One-Day cricket at Emirates Old Trafford…

Sir Viv Richards was a force to be reckoned with when England welcomed the West Indies to the home of the Red Rose for the first One-Day International of the series on 31 May 1984.

His incredible 189 not out will be remembered as one of the finest batting displays played out on the hallowed turf as he single-handedly won the game for the visitors with only one other West Indian batsman scoring more than 20 runs (Baptiste, 26).
