Player Diary: Kate Cross

Down Under player diaries

Kate Cross, Lancashire Women and Lancashire Thunder seam bowler, is spending her winter down under in Perth, Australia.

After it was announced earlier this week that Kate will play in the Women’s Big Bash League for the Perth Scorchers, we check in to find out what she has been up to so far…

Hi everyone,

I arrived in Perth at the end of October and have had a really busy first four weeks or so.

I flew over for the third and fourth games of the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) competition which was over in Sydney against New South Wales (NSW) and then one at the Manuka Oval in Canberra against ACT - so I pretty much cracked on straight away!

We beat NSW, which was the first time in 11 years for Western Australia (WA) and it was who we lost to in the grand final last year, so a big win for us. Unfortunately, we lost against ACT in a game we probably shouldn’t have won, we weren’t at our best. I think we went from top of the table to fifth because of that loss which shows just how strong the competition is this year.

Since those matches, I have been playing club cricket for South Perth which is the same team that Brooke Guest plays for – Rob Jones has also played there for the last two years, so they know all about Lancashire!

The Big Bash news is obviously out there now. I am delighted to join the Scorchers and to be able to have another stab at playing in the WBBL. We met up as a squad on Monday and preparations for our first match against Hobart Hurricanes on 1 December are underway. We actually head to Melbourne early next week for a couple of warm-up matches before the first round of fixtures which are all being played in Melbourne as a festival – it will be good to see all of the other teams there!

In between training and playing, it’s pretty relaxed in Perth. No one would ever die of stress over here! However, the weather hasn’t been consistently warm yet which is odd for the time of year. But once summer kicks off you will not see a cloud in the sky and all of my down time will be spent at the beach.

Hopefully by the time my next update comes around, the Big Bash will be underway with some wins for the Scorchers to report on!

Thanks,
Crossy
