Second XI frustrated on final day at Worcestershire

Lancashire’s Second XI were denied victory in their Championship match against Worcestershire by a stubborn last wicket stand, who batted for 23 overs to secure a draw for the hosts at Barnt Green Cricket Club.

Following his century the night before, Rob Jones was quickly dismissed for 106 on the final morning. There were brief cameos from Shivnarine Chanderpaul (10) and Josh Bohannon (6*) but Lancashire soon declared on 386/4 with Danny Lamb unbeaten on 70, setting the home side 326 to win.

The visitors chased early wickets to force a result and opening bowlers Toby Lester and Liam Hurt took a wicket each in the closing stages of the morning session to leave Worcestershire 23/2.

Worcester opener Olly Westbury was joined at the crease by first innings centurion Joshua Dell and the pair took the score beyond three figures, before the latter was dismissed with a handy caught and bowled by Haseeb Hameed for 39.

SCORECARD

Lester (3/25), who finished with eight wickets in the match, and Hurt (3/40) continued to take wickets throughout the middle order as Lancashire put the home side under pressure, at 175/6.

When Westbury was finally dismissed for 104 the score was on 191/7, with over an hour of play remaining the Red Rose sensed a chance of victory.

Two quick Jack Morley (2/62) wickets edged them even closer, with one wicket required from the remaining 23 overs.

But Lancashire couldn’t find the breakthrough as the last wicket pairing of Zain Ul-Hassan (34*) and T Blackledge (7*) thwarted their best efforts to salvage a draw for Worcestershire.
