Second XI wrap up victory over Durham
Lancashire took Durham’s last four wickets before lunch to wrap up a comfortable victory by an innings and 31 runs in the Second XI Championship.
Durham still required another 124 to make Lancashire bat again when they resumed on 101-6 on Thursday morning at Emirates Riverside, and it looked like the Red Rose might make quick work of the tail when Justin Watson caught-and-bowled Read with only 18 added to the overnight score.
But the final three wickets made Lancashire wait, adding another 74 runs, with Liam Trevaskis making 56 before Lancashire skipper Arron Lilley caught him off the bowling of Jack Morley.
Whitehead and Main delayed the inevitable with a rapid last-wicket stand of 30, but the second win of the Championship campaign was claimed when Morley bowled Main to dismiss Durham for 193.
The wickets were shared around, with Morley, Lilley, Toby Lester and Danny Lamb taking two apiece. The impressive win was built around Lamb’s haul of 5-37 in Durham’s first dig, and centuries from Brooke Guest and Shivnarine Chanderpaul in Lancs’ total of 352-4 declared.
Next up for Chris Benbow’s side is the Roses clash with Yorkshire in the Championship, starting in Southport on 12 June.
