Alex Davies hits ton during England Lions warm-up clash
Davies kicks off India tour with a century
Lancashire's wicket-keeper batsman Alex Davies struck a century while opening the batting as England Lions were narrowly defeated by a BCCI Board President XI in Thiruvananthapuram.
In the first warm-up match, ahead of the five match 50-over series which kicks off against India A next week, England Lions - captained by Sam Billings - elected to bat first.
Davies opened the innings alongside Ben Duckett and crashed exactly 100 from 124 balls, striking eight fours and a six.
The Red Rose man was dismissed in the 39th over with the score on 178-3, with the Lions going on to post 255-6 from their 50 overs - Sam Hain and Billings (both 31) supporting Davies.
India reached their target to complete a four wicket win in the final over of the innings, despite three wickets for Notts seamer Zak Chappell, with opening batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad scoring 110.
Alex Davies, said: “A hundred is a nice way to start, but a little disappointing not to get over the line at the end. The boys toiled hard – it was our first game and we’ve only been in the country six days. With only five bowling options [in the game], we’re pretty happy to take them to the last over.
“We’ve practiced on the ground for three or four days, so you get to know the angles and the boundaries, as well as a feel for the pitch. I wanted to spend some time in the middle in the first warm-up game and I just stuck to that plan. Me and Ducky [Ben Duckett] bat well together, so it was nice to open with him.”
England Lions play a second warm-up game on Sunday before embarking on a five-match limited-overs series against India A, starting on Wednesday. The tour concludes with two four-day unofficial ‘Tests’ against India A in Wayanad and Mysore.
