Lancashire and England star Kate Cross continues to pursue second career in media

Lancashire Women star Kate Cross has said that cricket has introduced her to people she ‘never thought (she) would meet’ after the England seamer went behind the scenes with the BBC Test Match Special team earlier on this summer.

During England’s fourth Ashes Test Match against Australia, Cross was able to join the famous commentary team, building on a long-held interest in pursuing a career in the media. Amongst others, she had the opportunity to pick the brains of broadcasting legend Stephen Fry.

Cross, 28, is a regular for her national side, but has been thinking about her second career since being told she was a natural in front of the camera after appearing in a televised interview during her Test debut in early 2014.

As part of its ongoing Futures Week, the PCA spoke to Cross about the origins of her interest in a career in the media, the opportunities she has had so far and what her plans are for the future.

“Your sports career doesn’t last forever – everyone always reminds me of that. So I’m just trying to make sure I’ve got some things to fall back on if the worst did happen,” Cross said.

“I’m always trying to get a little bit of work experience in the media so I’m working hard with the BBC.

“I got to go to the fourth Ashes Test Match at Emirates Old Trafford this year and do a work experience day there with the BBC Test Match Special team.

“I was able to see everything that happens behind the scenes, not just the stuff that gets put on the radio but also seeing how it all gets put together, which was really interesting.”
