Narrow defeat for Red Rose Academy
Lancashire Cricket Academy lost by three wickets in their opening match of the 2019 season, a two-day friendly against Durham at Northern Cricket Club.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, the Red Rose made a good start with Ben Walkden (49), George Bell (35) and Subhaan Mahmood (37) all amongst the runs.
With 65 overs bowled, Lancashire declared their first innings on 186-6 before Jack Wynn (1-21) removed Durham opener Ben McKinney early on with the ball.
However a good second wicket partnership between Sol Bell (67*) and Robbie Dawson (21) moved Durham beyond three figures.
Praharsh Parikh (2-12) then took two wickets, with both batsman caught, before Durham declared 113-3 as the two side's looked to force a result on the final day.
Lancashire scored quick runs in their second innings, through openers Ali Chughtai (32) and Joe Ball (46) before declaring on 153-6.
Declaration left Durham with a target of 227 to win the game. With limited overs left in the game, they would need to score at around 3.8 rpo. At tea on day two, Durham had reached 76-3 from 27 overs.
After tea, Durham accelerated, adding 30 runs before the fourth wicket fell. Then came the fifth wicket partnership between Mackintosh and McCarthy (33) which seized the game by the scruff of the neck. They added 94 runs in 13.4 overs.
By the time MacKintosh had moved beyond three figures the match was almost wrapped up, he finished 113 not out as Durham completed a three wicket win.
Wynn, Mahmood and Chughtai all collected two wickets each during the Durham second innings.
