Lancashire defeated in opening tour game

Lancashire defeated in opening tour game

Match Report - Lancashire vs Surrey

Lancashire were defeated by eight wickets on the opening fixture on this year’s pre-season tour at the ICC Academy despite an impressive century from Alex Davies and 99 from Brooke Guest.

Keaton Jennings, captaining Lancashire for the first time, lost the toss with Surrey electing to bowl first.

Jennings opened the batting with Alex Davies but Lancashire lost early wickets on a wicket that was doing a bit early on. Glen Chapple's side were reduced to 75/5 with Jennings, Bohannon, Jones, Hameed and Croft all dismissed cheaply.

The loss of wickets did not affect Alex Davies with the Lancashire opener reaching his half century from 59 deliveries.

Davies was joined by Guest and the pair rebuilt Lancashire’s innings well. The Lancashire wicket keeper pressed on and reached his century from 108 balls, hitting 14 boundaries and one six in his innings. He was eventually dismissed by Ryan Patel for 112.

Brooke Guest reached his half century and was well supported by Stephen Parry (18) who contributed with useful late order runs. Guest was on 99 with one ball left of the innings, but he was brilliantly caught on the boundary by Scott Borthwick off the bowling of Conor Mckerr.

SCORECARD

Lancashire were bowled out for 280 from 50 overs exactly.

In response, Surrey started positively with Will Jacks and Mark Stoneman applying pressure on Lancashire’s openers Tom Bailey and Richard Gleeson.

Jacks hit a quick 44 before Tom Bailey made Lancashire’s opening breakthrough but Stoneman and then Ollie Pope continued to pile runs on for Surrey.

Stoneman reached his century and Pope brought up a rapid half century for Surrey.

Steven Croft caught Stoneman off his own bowling but Pope continued to attack and Surrey chased down the total with eight wickets remaining.

Lancashire are back in action tomorrow against the USA at the ICC Academy.
