Lancashire Women edged out by Sussex
Narrow defeat for Red Rose
Lancashire Women were edged out by 3 runs in a rain affected Royal London Women's One-Day cup match against Sussex at Heywood CC.
Following a rain delayed start the fixture was reduced to 35-overs per side, with Lancashire winning the toss and electing to field first.
Laura Jackson (2-14) struck twice in her first over to leave Sussex 2-2, before Danielle Wyatt (47) began the visitors rebuild.
Spin bowlers Sophie Ecclestone (2-36) and Alex Hartley (1-24) collected wickets during the middle overs before Emma Lamb (2-17) dismissed Wyatt and Freya Davies (32) at the back end of the innings.
Sussex posted 135-7 from their 35 overs and skipper Eve Jones (17) and Lamb (12) made a decent start to the run chase.
Georgie Boyce continued her fine start to the season with 47, but regular wickets fell around her in the middle overs.
Boyce went with three overs remaining with the score on 124-5 and that sparked a flurry of Lancashire wickets.
They required 8 to win from the final over but when Kate Cross was dismissed off the penultimate delivery, the Red Rose needed 5 from the final ball with Hartley only running a single.
Lancashire Women are back in action today as they on Kent at Newton le Willows CC.
