Maxwell targeting all-round improvement

Maxwell targeting all-round improvement

The Australian all-rounder calls the Birmingham Bears defeat a 'wake-up call' as the North Group nears its conclusion

Glenn Maxwell says Lancashire Lightning were off the pace in all three departments as they dropped to a first Vitality Blast defeat at the hands of Birmingham Bears.

Despite the all-rounder's blistering 79 off 39 balls, the Lightning fell up short in chasing 180 for a sixth straight Vitality Blast win at Edgbaston.

Maxwell and Keaton Jennings put on a century stand after the loss of three wickets inside the powerplay, with Maxwell almost repeating his heroics from the previous week's win against Notts Outlaws.

But when he departed with 45 required from 26 deliveries, the Lightning were unable to find the firepower needed to get over the line.

“I felt like if I’d batted two more over, the game would have been pretty much done," the 30-year-old reflected after the match.

“Once you lose a wicket it was hard for the next bloke to start. You needed time to get yourself in, the spinners were getting a fair bit out of it.

“We were trying to pick our targets and it was going all right, but unfortunately one mistake meant it all unravelled pretty quickly."

Despite the closeness of the result and retaining their spot at the top of the North Group table, Maxwell is insistent the Lightning have plenty improve upon with five games left of the group stages.

“The result is probably a bit of a wake up call for us, we were a bit off in all three departments I thought," he said.

“A bit sloppy with the ball, not our crisp best in the field, we have a lot of improvement to make.

"To still be on top of the table is a good problem to have, but we have some things to work on which we’ll rectify in the next couple of days.

"We’ll look forward to our next games on Wednesday and Friday.”
