Emirates Old Trafford registers record-demand for 2021 International Matches

Following an unprecedented year of behind-closed-doors cricket, Emirates Old Trafford has witnessed record demand for International matches at the venue in 2021.

The home of Lancashire Cricket will welcome Pakistan for an International IT20 on Tuesday 20 July and India for a Test Match on 10-14 September, 2021, and, after announcing the fixtures on November 18, the venue has seen an all-time record number of ticket applications.

With a week remaining in the ballot period, Emirates Old Trafford has experienced a 15% increase in applicants, compared to the same period for the previous high - the memorable Ashes Test Match in 2019.

Discussing the record numbers, Lancashire Cricket Chief Executive, Daniel Gidney, said: “The demand for International tickets has been incredible and can be explained by a number of factors but, without question, the biggest is the desperation for fans to experience live cricket again after this year’s schedule was wiped out by the Coronavirus pandemic. It’s been an incredibly tough year for society as a whole and there is now genuine excitement in being able to look forward to a time when we can do all the things we are passionate about with our friends and family, without restrictions.

“With regards these two fixtures, it of course helps that we are hosting a pivotal Fifth Test against India and an IT20 against one of the most explosive and entertaining white ball teams, in Pakistan. We can’t wait to welcome supporters back to the venue next year and we are thrilled that we will host two of the most passionate fanbases in world cricket.”

The 2021 International matches follow on from the venue’s successful hosting of 21 days of behind-closed-doors, bio-secure International cricket this summer, which helped protect the ECB’s multi-million-pound broadcast contract with Sky Sports and BBC.

Over the course of the summer, more than 6,000 COVID-19 tests were administered at the venue, with all tests returning negative results. On the back of those fixtures, Emirates Old Trafford launched the Safe in One Place campaign to share the knowledge and best practice gained from creating a bio-secure venue with the wider events industry.

The initiative saw the club share key guidelines for the wider events industry via the Emirates Old Trafford website and host a virtual roundtable with a panel of industry leaders, sharing key learnings from operating venues during the pandemic and discussing the future of the events and hospitality industry.

In addition to International and domestic cricket fixtures, next year will see the launch of the new ECB competition, The Hundred, with the Manchester Originals home games set to take place at Emirates Old Trafford. In addition, the venue will welcome American supergroup, The Killers, on Saturday 12 June.
