Glenn Maxwell re-signs for Vitality Blast 2020
The star Australian all-rounder will play in at least the first eight matches of Lancashire Lightning's Vitality Blast season
Maxwell, who became a firm favourite among Members and supporters at Emirates Old Trafford last summer, will play in at least the first eight North Group fixtures before joining up with Australia for international duty.
The star all-rounder, who remains one of the best and most destructive T20 players in world cricket, will feature in five Lancashire Lightning home fixtures, starting against Northants Steelbacks at Liverpool CC on Friday 29 May.
Voted Lancashire’s 2019 T20 Player of the Year at the End of Season Awards, the 31-year-old had a huge influence on and off the pitch as the Lightning reached the Vitality Blast quarter-final stage.
Starting with a 30-ball half-century on T20 debut for the Club, Maxwell finished with 305 runs at an average of almost 50 in addition to eight catches and six wickets.
His four catches in the pulsating comeback win over Notts Outlaws was a Club record in a T20 innings, which followed a 46-ball 73 to drag Lancashire from a perilous first innings position.
He remains a huge draw in the Indian Premier League and will play for Kings XI Punjab in this year’s competition, while he captained Melbourne Stars to a second consecutive Big Bash League final last month.
In total, Maxwell has scored nearly 6,000 T20 runs across his entire career including three centuries and a career-best of 145* against Sri Lanka in 2016.
After signing a contract for the 2020 season, Maxwell said: “Last season was one of the best summers of cricket I have ever experienced and I cannot wait to return to Emirates Old Trafford in 2020.
“We were very unfortunate not to progress further after dominating the North Group and I was so impressed with the talent inside the changing room. I’m very confident we can improve on the quarter-final finish of 2019.
“I have been keeping in touch with the lads ever since I departed in September and I’m already excited to catch up with everyone when I arrive in May.”
Lancashire’s Director of Cricket, Paul Allott, said: “Glenn is one of the most sought after players in world cricket and to have signed him again after the enormous impact he made last year is hugely significant as we go in search of a second Vitality Blast title.
“To have a player of his talent on the pitch, as well as the person he is away from the field, can only enhance our prospects in this year’s tournament. He is extremely generous with his time in passing on his experiences to younger players and will no doubt play a huge part in their development once again.
“He firmly embraced himself in the culture of Lancashire Cricket last year, understood the pride in pulling on the Red Rose and we can’t wait to welcome him back to Emirates Old Trafford.”
Tickets are now on general sale for all seven of Lancashire's Vitality Blast 2020 matches.
Prices start from £5 adults and £1 juniors.
