Lancashire Legends: Ian Austin

Lancashire Legends: Ian Austin

In the first of a new series, Ian Austin chats to Warren Hegg about his playing career with the Red Rose

Lancashire Legends, a new mini-series involving interviews with legends of the Red Rose, launches today with former Lancashire and England all-rounder, Ian Austin.

Hosted by ex-wicketkeeper and current Head of Cricket Business, Warren Hegg, the series aims to bring tales from years gone by to Lancashire Members and supporters in their own homes during the coronavirus pandemic.

First up is Austin who, like Hegg, was an integral part of the all-conquering Kings of One-Day Cricket side during the 90s. Among the topics of discussion were:

  • Coming through the Lancashire Academy system together
  • Being part of the famous Kings of One-Day Cricket
  • Learning reverse swing off Wasim Akram, and what it was like to have an international superstar in the changing room
  • The unorthodox nature of Austin's batting before his time
  • Bowling at the death and using 'old' skills in the modern game

Austin also reveals how, up until recent weeks, he had never seen any footage of finals he played in for the Red Rose until someone showed him a recap of the 1996 Benson & Hedges Cup Final on YouTube!

'Bully' is the first of a number of ex-players who will feature over the coming weeks, with more names to be announced in due course.
