Watling selected in Team of the Year
The New Zealand wicketkeeper takes a spot behind the stumps in the ICC's 2019 Test Team of the Year
BJ Watling's exceptional 2019 has been recognised with a place in the ICC's Test Team of the Year for 2019.
The 34-year-old, who will play in Lancashire's first nine County Championship matches this summer, is one of three New Zealanders to be selected alongside ex-Red Rose player Neil Wagner.
He enjoyed a stellar year behind the stumps for the Blackcaps and scored a memorable double hundred against England in November.
Added to another hundred in Sri Lanka during his previous Test match, Watling amassed 559 runs at an average of 55.90.
During the year, he passed Brendon McCullum as the highest-scoring wicketkeeper in New Zealand Test history and has now scored more centuries than any other Blackcaps 'keeper.
He also recorded 28 catches from seven matches, underlining his reputation as one of the safest pairs of hands in world cricket.
Watling is joined by England all-rounder Ben Stokes, who also won the ICC's Cricketer of the Year, as well as Australian quartet Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, who helped their country retain the Ashes with victory at Emirates Old Trafford.
