Live Blog: Lancashire v Hampshire, Day 1

Welcome to Day One of Lancashire's latest LV=County Championship clash against Hampshire at Liverpool.

6.00pm, CLOSE
Lancashire 1st innings 25-3, Bohannon 11* Blatherwick 4* trail by 118 runs.
An incident packed first day comes to a close with Hampshire hitting back with those three wickets after being bowled out cheaply themselves.

So it turned out to be a day of mixed fortunes!

Our report and reaction from today will follow shortly.

5.35pm, 14.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 15-3, Bohannon 6* Blatherwick 0* trail by 128 runs.
George Balderson rather fences at a delivery from Abbas outside off stump and edges to wicketkeeper Tom Alsop.
Jack Blatherwick comes in as nightwatchman.

5.20pm, 11.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 10-2, Balderson 5* Bohannon 1* trail by 133 runs.
Definitely not the start we wanted!
Luke Wells is given out lbw to Keith Barker without scoring.

5.00pm, 6.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 6-1, Balderson 2* Wells 0* trail by 137 runs.
Alex Davies has gone, bowled by Mohammad Abbas for 2.
Just watched the replay, that was a good delivery that straightened off the pitch.

4.25pm - Change of innings
Hampshire 1st innings 143 all out
Lancashire have achieved their first target today, bowling Hampshire out for a low score with the visitors failing to achieve any batting points.
Matt Parkinson picked up the final wicket to finish with 3-9 when Mason Crane holed out to Luke Wood at long-on for 25.

4.10pm, 70.0 overs
Hampshire 1st innings 132-9, Crane 15* Abbas 0*
Matt Parkinson has a second wicket, Brad Wheal beaten by a quicker delivery and lbw for 5.

3.25pm, TEA Day 1, 64.0 overs
Hampshire 1st innings 129-8, Crane 14* Wheal 4*
Another good session for Lancashire with four more wickets falling despite the wicket appearing to start easing out in the afternoon sunshine.

3.00pm, 57.0 overs
Hampshire 1st innings 122-8, Crane 11* Wheal 0*
Matt Parkinson makes the breakthrough as Felix Organ, on 22, essays an attempted heave off the leg spinner and skies a catch to Josh Bohannon at cover!

2.30pm, 49.0 overs
Hampshire 1st innings 100-7, Organ 11* Crane 1*
It has been a tense afternoon as Felix Organ and Mason Crane battle hard to keep the Red Rose attack at bay.
Crane has had a life after being dropped at slip, Balderson the unlucky bowler for the second time today.
The wicket is drying out in the afternoon sunshine and appears to be flattening out a bit.

2.00pm, 42.0 overs
Hampshire 1st innings 90-7, Organ 7* Crane 0*
Keith Barker has gone for 9 to a sensational diving catch by Alex Davies!
Barker edged Luke Wood down the leg side and Davies was at full stretch when he caught the ball one-handed. Brilliant stuff from the keeper.

1.35pm, 36.0 overs
Hampshire 1st innings 79-6, Barker 0* Organ 4*
Lancashire's day keeps getting better!
Two wickets fall in the same Tom Bailey over but not as you might expect!
The fast bowler reacted quickly, diving and deflecting a straight drive from James Vince onto the stumps at the bowler's end where the unlucky Liam Dawson was out of his ground and run out for 10.

Four balls later Bailey took a more coventional wicket when James Vince edged to Alex Davies after wafting at a ball outside off.

12.30pm, LUNCH Day 1, 30.0 overs
Hampshire 1st innings 64-4, Vince 15* Dawson 4*
Lancashire have gained an early advantage after taking four Hampshire wickets in that first session.

After Tom Bailey had removed Ian Holland in the third over, Hampshire responded well before George Balderson came on to transform the morning with 3-12 in the run-up to the interval.

The young seamer bowled a good length and found enough movement to trouble the batsmen regularly with all three wickets falling to edges to wicketkeeper and slip.

12.15pm, 27.0 overs
Hampshire 1st innings 54-4, Vince 8* Dawson 2*
What a morning George Balderson is having!
Running in from the Pavilion End he has now taken 3-3 in 11 balls! The latest wicket was Joe Weatherley who edged behind for 18.

11.55am, 21.0 overs
Hampshire 1st innings 43-3, Weatherley 17*, Vince 0*
George Balderson strikes with two wickets in four balls! That's transformed the morning.
Tom Alsop edged to second slip where Danny Lamb took a really good catch low down and then Nick Gubbins edged behind.

11.35am, 18.0 overs
Hampshire 1st innings 38-1, Weatherley 16*, Alsop 21*
Apologies, a few technical issues knocked us off line for 20 mins but in truth not a lot has happened. The Lancashire bowlers have had several unsuccessful appeals and Weatherley and Alsop have played and missed a bit.

But both have settled in with Alsop just driving Wood nicely for four.

10.40am, 3.0 overs
Hampshire 1st innings 2-1, Weatherley 0*, Alsop 1*
Lancashire have made the perfect start after putting Hampshire in to bat.
Ian Holland playing forward defensively to Tom Bailey gets an inside edge that goes off his pad to Dane Vilas at short leg.

10.00am

9.00am
Good morning from Aigburth, where we have a dry, cloudy morning with play due to start on time at 10.30am.

Liverpool Cricket Club are the hosts for our final LV= Insurance County Championship match of 2021 and what a game we have in prospect over the next four days!

Championship leaders Hampshire are the visitors to Liverpool hoping to clinch a first title success since 1973. They lead Warwickshire by 2.5 points and know that a 21 point win would clinch the title.

Second-placed Warwickshire take on Somerset at Edgbaston and will be hoping to benefit from any Hampshire slip-up at Aigburth.

For third-place Lancashire, 4 points behind the leaders, the situation is somewhat more complicated.

If Lancashire are to win title, these 3 things have to happen:

  • To go above Hampshire they must gain 5 MORE POINTS than Hampshire (4 points are insufficient, Hampshire would stay ahead in the tie-breaker with more wins than Lancs).
  • To go above Warwicks they must gain 1 MORE POINT than Warwicks.
  • To stay above fourth-placed Notts, who are 1.5 points behind, Lancs must not gain fewer than two points less than Notts.

Notts play Yorkshire at Trent Bridge, 6.5 points behind Hampshire, and will have to hope the results in the other two matches go their way.

So four teams all harbour hopes of winning the title – it promises to be a fascinating finale!

Here’s how the table stands before the start of play today.
