Live Blog: Lancashire v Warwickshire, Day 1
Welcome to Day One of Lancashire's latest LV=County Championship clash against Warwickshire.
5.55pm, CLOSE Day 1
Warwickshire 259-3, 87.0 overs, Hain 113*Rhodes 5*
Indeed that is it for the day with no prospect of the light improving under the heavy cloud cover all around Old trafford.
Thank you for following today's blog, we will be back at 11am tomorrow.
Warwickshire 259-3, 87.0 overs, Hain 113*Rhodes 5*
Bad light has stopped play. The floodlights are on but have really taken over from the natural light so a resumption with 9 overs left must be in doubt.
Warwickshire 246-3, 83.0 overs, Hain 107*Rhodes 0*
The 3rd wicket partnership between Chris Benjamin and Hain has come to an end after 237-runs as Benjamin top edges a pull off Saqib Mahmood and is easily caught by Dane Vilas close to the stumps at the bowlers end.
Benjamin departs for a fine 127 and Lancashire finally have made the breakthrough.
Warwickshire 240-2, 81.0 overs, Benjamin 123* Hain 105*
The floodlights are on as the light has steadily declined over the last half hour and Lancashire have taken the new ball.
Tom Bailey and Saqib Mahmood return to the attack.
Warwickshire 228-2, 75.0 overs, Benjamin 115* Hain 101*
Sam Hain reaches his century from 198 balls with 12 fours as the visitors build towards a big total.
The bowlers are plugging away looking for a breakthrough but this wicket is offering little assistance.
Warwickshire 202-2, 67.0 overs, Benjamin 101* Hain 89*
That’s a maiden century on his Championship debut for Chris Benjamin as he glances down the leg side for his 10th four! It's been an excellent innings that has taken 194 balls.
Meanwhile Lancashire look to have another injury issue with Liam Livingstone going off holding his shoulder after diving to stop a boundary.
4.00pm, TEA Day 1
Warwickshire 192-2, 64.0 overs, Benjamin 93* Hain 88*
The visitors have made great progress this afternoon and haven’t lost a wicket in that session. Chris Benjamin has made a career-best 93 and along with Sam Hain added 185 runs for the third wicket.
There have been one or two close calls, notably when Benjamin nearly ran himself out on 33, and Dane Vilas has constantly rotated the attack and tried a variety of fielding options. But so far Lancashire have not been able to prise either batsman out on what is becoming an increasingly good wicket to bat on.
Warwickshire 164-2, 53.0 overs, Benjamin 74* Hain 80*
Glad to report that Matt Parkinson has returned to the field and is back bowling.
But Hain and Benjamin are motoring on, now reaching their 150 partnership from 287 balls.
Warwickshire 132-2, 47.0 overs, Benjamin 67* Hain 55*
Matt Parkinson has been hit in the face after diving to stop the ball off his own bowling. He's got a cut that needs attention off the field but reassuringly Matt was sharing a joke as he walked off so hopefuly it's not too bad.
Liam Livingstone completed the over during which Sam Hain reached his half century off 118 balls with his sixth boundary.
Livingstone is continuing to bowl after taking over from Parkinson.
Warwickshire 110-2, 42.0 overs, Benjamin 57* Hain 43*
Chris Benjamin has reached his fifty from 119 balls with 4 fours and the 22 year-old has now a somewhat unique and enviable record of having scored a half-century on his T20, List A and Championship Warwickshire debuts.
Benjamin and Hain have also posted their century partnership off 219 balls.
Matt Parkinson is back in the Red Rose attack with his second spell from the James Anderson end.
Warwickshire 84-2, 33.0 overs, Benjamin 37* Hain 37*
Close call! Chris Benjamin very nearly ran himself out on 33 after pushing a delivery from George Balderson in to the leg side and setting off for a quick single.
The batsman had given up attempting to make his ground as the throw from Rob Jones came in from square leg but agonisingly-from a Red Rose viewpoint-the ball just missed the stumps at the bowler's end.
1.00pm, LUNCH Day 1
Warwickshire 77-2, 30.0 overs, Benjamin 33* Hain 36*
Chris Benjamin and Sam Hain have continued to make progress from a position of 7 for 2 earlier this morning.
Both have played some nice shots and with increasing confidence as the session progressed against some accurate bowling from the Red Rose attack with Tom Bailey grabbing those two early wickets.
Warwickshire 57-2, 17.0 overs, Benjamin 26* Hain 23*
Chris Benjamin and Sam Hain have battled away against some accurate Lancashire bowling to make a recovery for the visitors after the loss of those two early wickets with a 50-run partnership.
Warwickshire 7-2, 4.2 overs, Benjamin 0 Hain 0*
A great start for Lancashire as Tom Bailey strikes again trapping Dom Sibley lbw for 3.
Warwickshire 4-1, 3.0 overs, Sibley 0* Benjamin 0*
An early breakthrough for Lancashire as Tom Bailey moves one away from left hander Rob Yates and finds the edge, Rob Jones taking the catch at third slip.
