Live Blog: Somerset v Lancashire, Day 1

Welcome to Day One of Lancashire's latest LV=County Championship clash against Somerset at Taunton.

5.50pm, CLOSE Day 1, 96.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 364-8, Bailey 54* Blatherwick 1*
Steven Croft edged behind off Marchant de Lange for 71 to his clear frustration in the penultimate over of the day.
With every bonus point vital you can understand why.
But it has still been a very good day for Lancashire after being put in to bat.

5.35pm, 93.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 361-7, Croft 70* Bailey 52*
Tom Bailey has reached his half century from 111 balls and it's the first time Tom has made consecutive fifties in first-class cricket.

5.25pm, 90.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 349-7, Croft 68* Bailey 43*
What an impressive partnership this has been by Steven Croft and Tom Bailey who have added 81 runs for the eighth wicket.
We thought that Croft was out a few minutes ago when he pulled Jack Brooks to Marchant de Lange at fine leg but it was off a no ball.

4.55pm, 83.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 326-7, Croft 58* Bailey 34*
Somerset finally opt for the second new ball after 83 overs with this 8th wicket partnership now standing at 58 runs.
It is getting duller and cloudier prompting the floodlights to come on for the first time today.

4.25pm, 76.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 311-7, Croft 54* Bailey 32*
That is a really valuable fifty by Steven Croft who has guided Lancashire to a third batting point in tandem with Tom Bailey with the new ball four overs away.

3.25pm, TEA Day 1, 64.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 276-7, Croft 41* Bailey 3*
149 runs were scored in that session with five wickets falling, and this game is moving on rapidly.

Danny Lamb was lbw for 0 to give Jack Brooks a third wicket and this game is pretty evenly poised at the moment.

3.05pm, 58.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 267-6, Croft 35* Lamb 0*
Left arm spinner Roelof van der Merwe gets his first twirl of the day but the latest news is that Dane Vilas has gone lbw for 33 to Jack Brooks to end an entertaining 65-run partnership with Croft that came from 65 balls.

2.45pm, 53.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 251-5, Vilas 33* Croft 22*
The fall of wickets has not slowed the scoring, in fact it has increased.

Dane Vilas and Steven Croft have gone after the Somerset bowling with some thumping drives and pulls to reach their 50 partnership off 43 balls and Lancashire have a second batting point.

2.25pm, 47.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 201-5, Vilas 9* Croft 5*
This game is moving on at a pace!
Somerset skipper Tom Abell is fighting back with two more wickets.

Josh Bohannon had driven consecutive fours off Abell to reach his half century from 117 balls but then cut the next one straight to Ned Leonard at point.

Rob Jones edged to slip for 5 as Abell is angling the ball inwards and finding some movement.

2.00pm, 44.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 187-3, Bohannon 42* Vilas 4*
A century and out for Luke Wells!
Luke had taken consecutive fours off Tom Abell to reach his first century for Lancashire in style.
But he defended against the following delivery that took the edge and flew to James Hildreth at slip to end a fabulous innings of 103 and break a 155-run partnership with Josh Bohannon.

1.43pm, 40.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 160-2, Wells 88* Bohannon 38*
Luke Wells living dangeously! Having pulled Marchant de Lange to midwicket for four, Wells top edges a short delivery from de Lange that Azhar Ali sprinting round from fine leg just can't quite reach.

But Wells and Bohannon have continued to score well since lunch as this wicket appears to be losing its early life.

1.20pm, 34.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 132-2, Wells 73* Bohannon 25*
Into the afternoon and Somerset start with Jack Brooks, who bowled so well first up, and Marchant de Lange who Josh Bohannon drives for the first boundary after lunch.

12.30pm, LUNCH Day 1, 31.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 127-2, Wells 72* Bohannon 21*

What a good innings from Luke Wells this morning. He’s taken on the Somerset attack with a series of drives to the boundary-13 of them-to reach the break unbeaten on 72 from just 75 balls.
That was after the loss of two early wickets that had left Lancashire on 27-2.

But this unbeaten partnership of 100 off 147 balls between Wells and Josh Bohannon, who has played a great supporting role, has taken Lancashire into a good position at lunch after being put in.

12.15pm, 26.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 116-2, Wells 63* Bohannon 21*
The introduction of Ben Green has slowed the scoring becaude he has bowled straight, conceding 12 off his 5 overs. Tom Lammonby is on at the other end.
Wells and Bohannon have added 90 runs for this wicket.

11.55am, 21.2 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 102-2, Wells 50* Bohannon 20*
The runs continue to flow and Luke Wells has 48-ball fifty after cutting Ben Green for his 11th four!
This has been outstanding from Wells this morning.
The 50 partnership came a few overs ago and took 66 balls.

11.40am, 18.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 79-2, Wells 36* Bohannon 11*
Luke Wells has tucked into Tom Abell with two drives for four in his last over and the Somerset skipper has taken himself off and turned to medium-pacer Ben Green.

11.25am, 13.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 60-2, Wells 26* Bohannon 5*
The scoring rate continues to advance rapidly courtesy mainly of some lovely drives by Luke Wells either straight or through cover.
It's been a good riposte after losing those early wickets but Jack Brooks in particular has found a lot of movement and beaten the bat on several ocassions.

11.00am, 6.2 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 27-2, Wells 0* Bohannon 0*
Jack Brooks gets one to dart away and Alex Davies has nicked it to Steve Davies behind the stumps for 3.
The morning has quickly taken on a different complexion!

10.55am, 5.4 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 27-1, Davies 3* Wells 0*
George Balderson was batting nicely there but he's gone after edging Leonard (his maiden first-class wicket) to Lammonby at gully after making 22 off 23 balls.

10.50am, 5.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 26-0, Balderson22* Davies 3*
Nice start by Lancashire with George Balderson driving nicely and he has three fours already.

10.30am, 1.0 overs
Lancashire 1st innings 3-0, Balderson 1* Davies 2*
George Balderson and Alex Davies are facing the opening overs from Jack Brooks and debutant Ned Lennard.

RECENT MEETINGS

By coincidence the four days of this game are being played on the identical dates to the match played at Taunton ten years ago when Lancashire clinched a first outright Championship title in 77 years.

That victory was Lancashire’s last at this ground with three draws, a defeat, and an incredibly thrilling tie in 2018, the results from the 5 five matches here since that famous day.

Seamer Jack Blatherwick and left-arm spinner Tom Hartley both return the squad. Wicketkeeper George Lavelle drops out with Alex Davies taking over behind the stumps.
