Live Blog: Sussex v Lancashire, Day Three

Live updates from the 1st Central County Ground, Hove

Welcome to the live blog for Day Three of Lancashire's LV= Insurance County Championship match away to Sussex.

Live updates from today's play will appear below.

6.55pm, CLOSE Day 3, 30.0 overs
Lancashire 124-2, Jennings 31* Mahmood 1* need a further 129 runs to win.
What a shame for Luke Wells who was lbw to Jack Carson for 12 just before play ended.
But that has still been a great fightback by Lancashire today and has set up what promises to be an exciting final day tomorrow.

Thanks for following this blog today. We will be back for the final day’s play at 11am tomorrow.
Today’s match report will appear shortly.

6.39pm, 26.0 overs
Lancashire 117-1, Jennings 31* Wells 10* need a further 136 runs to win.
The shadows are lengthening as we continue with 6 overs still to go.
Keaton Jennings and Luke Wells look happy to get to stumps without worrying too much about scoring runs.

6.17pm, 20.3 overs
Lancashire 102-1, Jennings 28* Wells 0* need a further 151 runs to win.
Keaton Jennings has cut his second boundary and Alex Davies has twice steered Stuart Meaker cleverly to the vacant third man boundary, the second bringing up the hundred partnership.

Fabulous batting by these two but Davies has gone, bowled by Meaker for a quite outstanding 73.
There are 11 overs left today and the weather is bright at the moment so we should get these overs in.

5.50pm, 13.4 overs
Lancashire 69-0, Jennings 18* Davies 50* need a further 184 runs to win.
Alex Davies has a 36-ball half century and it has been a quite brilliant innings including one six over midwicket and seven brutally struck fours.

5.35pm, 10.0 overs
Lancashire 50-0, Jennings 11* Davies 37* need a further 203 runs to win.
Lancashire have fifty runs on the board. This is breathless batting by Alex Davies who has taken 27 balls to reach 36. Sussex make a double change bringing Stuart Meaker and George Garton into the attack.

5.22pm, 7.0 overs
Lancashire 35-0, Jennings 8* Davies 26* need a further 218 runs to win.
Al Davies isn’t hanging around. He’s just taken 18 off one Henry Crocombe over with a six and three thumping fours.

5.09pm, 4.1 overs
Lancashire 18-0, Jennings 6* Davies 11* need a further 235 runs to win.
Here we go, can Lancashire knock these runs off? If Henry Crocombe produces any more snorters similar to the third ball of the last over it could be tricky. It was a good length ball that flew head height through to Ben Brown.

Alex Davies has just pulled Crocombe for six and now needs a new bat! You just can't take your eyes off this game!

4.45pm, 46.1 overs
Sussex 2nd inns: 154 all out. Lancashire need 253 runs to win.
Liam Livingstone traps Henry Crocombe on the back foot plumb in front of the stumps to end the Sussex innings on 154 and that is a tremendous effort from the bowlers.

In the context of this game 253 to win looks a tough task but we will start the run chase with 32 overs still to play today.

4.38pm, 43.5 overs
Sussex 2nd inns: 140-9, Crocombe 0* Atkins 0* lead by 238 runs.
That could a huge moment! Matt Parkinson has produced another ripper! Delray Rawlins plays no shot to a delivery that landed about a foot outside off stump and gripped to hit the stumps!
Rawlins 45 runs might prove very crucial still but that was some delivery.

4.35pm, 43.0 overs
Sussex 2nd inns: 140-8, Rawlins 37* Crocombe 0* lead by 238 runs.
Big shout for lbw by Matt Parkinson against Henry Crocombe from the first ball after tea is turned down.
We have spin from both ends with Liam Livingstone working in tandem with Parkinson as the floodlights shine brightly in the gloom. 39 overs remain so this could be quite a long session weather permitting.

4.10pm, TEA Day 3, 41.3 overs
Sussex 2nd inns: 139-8, Rawlins 36* lead by 237 runs.
Delray Rawlins and Jack Carson are trying to be proactive, going for their shots and chancing their arm when they can which is making for some interesting moments.

They’ve added 37 important runs for their side but just before tea Carson is lbw to Matt Parkinson for 21. Another incident packed session and we've now had 12 wickets to fall today.

3.40pm, 34.4 overs
Sussex 2nd inns: 106-7, Rawlins 28* Carson 0* lead by 204 runs.
Stuart Meaker lofts Liam Livingstone just over the head of Alex Davies at mid-on and gets four!
Delray Rawlins is trying to attack whenever possible and he is now the top scorer of the innings.
But Meaker has now turned Livingstone into the hands of Steven Croft at midwicket and this game takes another twist!

3.20pm, 29.1 overs
Sussex 2nd inns: 87-6, Rawlins 17* Meaker 0* lead by 185 runs.
Delray Rawlins and George Garton have added some crucial runs but Garton has now gone, lbw for 19 to a Saqib Mahmood delivery that didn’t really get up very much. This is getting very interesting.
Stuart Meaker edges his first ball just short of second slip. Close!

3.05pm, 27.0 overs
Sussex 2nd inns: 80-5, Rawlins 17* Garton 16* lead by 180 runs.
After a 40 minute delay for rain we are back on the field, Liam Livingstone getting his first bowl of the innings

2.02pm, 19.4 overs
Sussex 2nd inns: 56-5, Rawlins 7* Garton 1* lead by 154 runs.
This incredible tumble of wickets continues! Ben Brown is beaten by a pitched-up swinging delivery from Danny Lamb and is lbw for 3. But moments later it starts to rain and play has been halted.

1.45pm, 15.4 overs
Sussex 2nd inns: 38-4, Brown 1* Rawlins 0* lead by 136 runs.
Tom Bailey strikes straight after lunch! Tom Clark departs lbw for 4.

1.00pm, LUNCH Day 3 14.0 overs
Sussex 2nd inns: 37-3, Clark 4* Brown 0* lead by 135 runs.
That has been a very lively morning with seven wickets falling in total. It’s been an excellent start by the Red Rose bowlers in the Sussex second innings but the hosts are still very much in the ascendancy.

12.56pm, 13.1 overs
Sussex 2nd inns: 37-3, Clark 4* Brown 0* lead by 135 runs.
And another wicket goes! Stiaan van Zyl pushes forward defensively to Tom Bailey but edges to Liam Livingstone at second slip and he's gone for 5.

12.49pm, 11.2 overs
Sussex 2nd inns: 28-2, van Zyl 0* Clark 0* lead by 126 runs.
Make that 28 for two! Tom Haines plays no shot to a Tom Bailey delivery that comes back into the left hander and flicks his pads, lbw for 19.

12.45pm, 10.4 overs
Sussex 2nd inns: 28-1, Haines 19* van Zyl 0* lead by 126 runs.
And it’s Danny Lamb who has the breakthrough! From the second ball of this over Lamb bowled a sharply rising delivery to Aaron Thomason that hit the shoulder of the bat but fell safely. But possibly unsettled by that Thomason edged the fourth ball to Luke Wells at first slip to depart for 9.

12.35pm, 8.0 overs
Sussex 2nd inns: 22-0, Thomason 7* Haines 15* lead by 120 runs.
Good searching opening spells from Saqib Mahmood and Tom Bailey but no breakthrough. Tom Haines has struck a nicely timed flick off his pads to the midwicket boundary. Dane Vilas turns to Danny Lamb for the 9th over.

12.14pm, 4.0 overs
Sussex 2nd inns: 9-0, Thomason 6* Haines 3* lead by 107 runs.
Arron Thomason punches the first boundary of the innings off the back foot as Saqib Mahmood and Tom Bailey probe for an early breakthrough. Hazy conditions now at Hove replacing the earlier sunshine.

11.49am, 98.2 overs
Lancashire 230 all out, Mahmood 11*  trail Sussex by 98 runs.
Matt Parkinson gloves a shortish ball from Stuart Meaker to wicketkeeper Ben Brown for 2 to end the Lancashire innings. Meaker finishes with 3-22 and Jack Carson, who got one over in this morning, has figures of 4-51.

11.40am, 96.3 overs
Lancashire 228-9, Mahmood 11* Parkinson 0* trail Sussex by 100 runs.
Saqib Mahmood has taken a couple of fours off Jamie Atkins, the first along the ground past the slips but the second an authentic straight drive. The umpires have also changed the ball which has apparently gone out of shape after 14 overs!
But another wicket goes as Stuart Meaker brings one back to trap Danny Lamb lbw for 27. Why did they change that ball!

11.22am, 92.3 overs
Lancashire 215-8, Lamb 25* Mahmood 0* trail Sussex by 113 runs.
Tom Bailey departs after being bowled by Henry Crocombe for 3

11.10am, 89.3 overs
Lancashire 205-7, Lamb 19* Bailey 0* trail Sussex by 123 runs.
A straight drive for four by Josh Bohannon off Henry Crocombe brings up the fifty partnership off one ball shy of 25 overs and Lancashire also have a first batting point. But in the following over Bohannon is trapped lbw for 37 by Jamie Atkins.

11.00am, 87.2 overs
Lancashire 197-6, Bohannon 30* Lamb 18* trail Sussex by 131 runs.
Josh Bohannon and Danny Lamb resume their partnership which is now worth 45 as Bohannon drives the second ball of the day from Jamie Atkins for four.

11.00am, Day 3
Following yesterday’s rain there are 2 overs to made up, so we will play a minimum of 98 overs today.
Lunch: 1.00-1.40pm, Tea: 3.50-4.10pm, Close 6.10pm.

10.30am
It is a beautiful sunny morning presently at Hove ahead of the third day’s play in our LV= Insurance County Championship match with Sussex.

The hosts made 328 in their first innings with Lancashire on 193-6 in reply and Red Rose hopes of reducing their 135 run deficit rest on the lower order contributing significant runs this morning. That happened last week at Canterbury and Josh Bohannon and Danny Lamb have added 41 for the seventh wicket so far, so here’s hoping.

Sussex off spinner Jack Carson made the headlines last weekend with 5-85 against Yorkshire on this ground, and already has four wickets in this innings so will be looking to equal or better that in just his 8th first-class match.

Reports stated that last week’s pitch was a bit two-paced and the odd delivery kept a bit low yesterday, so it will be interesting to see if conditions change much on what, so far, has been a good pitch when play resumes at 11.00am.
