Thunder players help to break down barriers this Christmas

Thunder Cricket is helping to break down barriers this Christmas by donating sanitary products to teenage girls and women who are unable to afford these essentials every month.

The Thunder First Team and Academy squads are also aiming to raise awareness around taboo subjects and particularly the impact which periods have upon female cricketers and sports people in general.

Both squads’ - along with staff from Lancashire Cricket - will be donating sanitary products, toiletry items and chocolate to local charity, Every Month Campaign, who will be delivering them to people who would otherwise struggle to access such essentials.

Players from the Thunder Academy will also be taking part in a Christmas-themed sponsored walk to raise further additional funds to supplement the donated products.

It is hoped that by helping to breakdown one of the biggest unspoken barriers that women in sport face, Thunder Cricket can then play a part in helping inspire more women to take up cricket.

Both Thunder and Lancashire Cricket will be setting up a link between the Club and Every Month Campaign for players and staff to get involved with their monthly initiatives which deliver essential products and raise awareness of the subject in our local area.

Speaking about the initiative Jen Barden, Thunder’s Senior Talent Manager, said: “This Christmas project idea was thought of by our Academy squad and - since hearing about it - the First Team squad have been determined to assist with an issue which they all feel passionately about.

“Women’s cricket has come so far recently, and we want to make sure that we continue to break down barriers and raise more awareness around previously taboo subjects such as periods.

“Whilst we are also helping others with the donation of period packs, we also hope that we can encourage this conversation to continue around all of women’s sport.”

Lancashire Cricket and staff based at Emirates Old Trafford can make a donation of sanitary products, toiletry items and chocolate by visiting the dedicated drop-off point in The Pavilion at Emirates Old Trafford.
