6.25pm, CLOSE Day 1
Essex 1st innings 280-7 after 96 overs, Lawrence 100 Snater 3
Those late wickets will have been a real boost to Lancashire after a tough day in the field.

Dan Lawrence on 99 pushed for a non-existent single to try and reach his hundred and Adam Rossington was well out of his ground by the time sub fielder George Balderson's throw reached Phil Salt.

However Lawrence did go his century off 178 balls in the following over.

But Luke Wood removed Simon Harmer for a duck with a fierce lifting delivery, gloved to  Salt.

That ended a tough day in the field for Lancashire who have fought back well since tea.

We will be back at 11am tomorrow for day two.

Essex 1st innings 260-5 after 90 overs, Lawrence 89 Rossington 15
Probably not a good time to ask Jimmy Anderson how he is feeling as he has now had three slip catches missed in the last few overs, the last two both off Adam Rossington - a difficult chance at third slip but much easier looking one at second slip.

Anderson has now been replaced by Luke Wood with six overs of the day left.

Essex 1st innings 237-5 after 85 overs, Lawrence 81 Rossington 0
Agonising for Anderson!

Dan Lawrence edges between first and second slip to get four runs to third man.

Essex 1st innings 233-5 after 84 overs, Lawrence 77 Rossington 0
Critchley goes for a fourth ball duck! Tom Bailey gets some movement out of this new ball and finds the edge, Phil Salt with the catch behind the stumps.

Essex 1st innings 233-4 after 83.2 overs, Lawrence 77 Critchley 0
It's Tom Bailey who makes the breakthrough with the new ball, bowling Paul Walter for 34 with a pitched-up delivery to break a partnership of 97 runs.

Essex 1st innings 227-3 after 80 overs, Lawrence 73 Walter 32
Lancashire take the new ball and hand it to James Anderson as they try to break this 91-run partnership between Dan Lawrence and Paul Walter.

Essex 1st innings 197-3 after 70 overs, Lawrence 53 Walter 17
Dan Lawrence, batting for the first time in nearly a month, goes to his fifty with a sweep for four off Matt Parkinson. It's taken 101 balls with 6 fours and Lawrence and Walter have now reached a fifty partnership off 98 balls.

3.55pm, TEA Day 1
Essex 1st innings 169-3 after 64 overs, Lawrence 39 Walter 11
Luke Wood produced a beauty of a delivery that nipped away, beating Paul Walter's outside edge just before the break. It's been that sort of day for the bowlers.

But Lancashire will be pleased to have fought back with two wickets this afternoon.

Essex are making slow but steady progress, adding 95 runs in that session.

Essex 1st innings 147-3 after 58 overs, Lawrence 26 Walter 3
Matt Parkinson and Luke Wood have done a good job here, drying up the runs and applying pressure as we head towards tea in six overs time.

Essex 1st innings 141-3 after 54 overs, Lawrence 23 Walter 0
Unbelievable! Dane Vilas at silly point has taken a stunning catch.

Nick Browne has driven a shortish ball from Jimmy Anderson off the back foot and straight into the hands of Vilas who somehow has held onto it!

Browne stood there for several seconds in total disbelief that he was out for 71 and I don't blame him.

Vilas meanwhile was mobbed by his jubiliant team mates, especially Anderson!

Essex 1st innings 124-2 after 49 overs, Browne 64 Lawrence 17
James Anderson has bowled 8 overs so far today in two spells and is now back for a third.

Essex 1st innings 109-2 after 44 overs, Browne 64 Lawrence 2
One wicket has fallen this afternoon with Tom Westley trying to sweep a Matt Parkinson delivery that was perhaps just too far wide of off stump for the shot. The resultant top edge went straight up in the air and was easily caught by Phil Salt next to the stumps.

Essex 1st innings 89-1 after 34 overs, Browne 50 Westley 26
Nick Browne goes to his half century off 101 balls including 7 fours by driving Hassan Ali straight for four and then picking up two runs to deep square leg.

Essex 1st innings 78-1 after 32 overs, Browne 39 Westley 26
Back after lunch with Luke Wood and newly-capped Hassan Ali looking for an early afternoon breakthrough.

1.00pm, LUNCH Day 1
Essex 1st innings 74-1 after 30 overs, Browne 38 Westley 23
The Lancashire bowlers have bowled some good lines this morning and can feel slightly aggrieved not to have picked up more wickets.

But they have not found much movement off the pitch with this ball - one of the new batch sent out this week - while Nick Browne in particular has shown excellent judgement in leaving the ball outside off stump, even if some have been mighty close!

It has been a fascinating battle with both batsmen putting away anything wayward.

Essex 1st innings 61-1 after 24 overs, Browne 38 Westley 12
Tom Bailey and James Anderson return for a second burst in the 25 minutes or so before lunch, the ground now bathed in bright, sunny conditions.

Essex 1st innings 42-1 after 18 overs, Browne 21 Westley 10
Nick Browne and Tom Westley have played with more freedom against Hassan Ali and Luke Wood although bowlers have found edges that have not carried to the slips.

It's been a good battle so far but there doesn't appear to be a lot of movement off the pitch so far this morning.

Essex 1st innings 15-1 after 9 overs, Browne 9 Westley 0
Tom Bailey had a big lbw shout against Alastair Cook turned down but a couple of balls later has his man! Cook edges a ball that held its line just outside off stump and Phil Salt takes a comfortable catch.

Essex 1st innings 15-0 after 8 overs, Browne 9 Cook 2
Tom Bailey and James Anderson have started well, forcing Nick Browne and Alastair Cook to be watchful during this opening thirty minutes but the Red Rose pair yet to make a breakthrough.

Hassan Ali receives his Lancashire Cap

There was a lovely moment before the start of play today when Hassan Ali was presented with his Lancashire Cap by James Anderson in front of the pavilion.

Essex 1st innings 5-0 after 1 over, Browne 1 Cook 0
Play under way with Lancashire looking for a first win against Essex since 2013.

Nick Browne and Sir Alastair Cook are facing the opening overs from Tom Bailey and Jimmy Anderson.
