U19s Cricket World Cup Watch: Part 5

U19s Cricket World Cup Watch: Part 5

England progressed to the semi-final of the U19s Cricket World Cup following a 6-wicket win over South Africa in Antigua last week. They take on Afghanistan today (1 February) live on Sky Sports.

Warwickshire’s Jacob Bethell hit a blistering 88 coming off just 42 balls as England chased down 210 in just 31.2 overs. Earlier in the day, Leicestershire’s leg spinner Rehan Ahmed took figures of 4-48 to book England a spot in the semis.

Speaking to Lancashire's Tom Aspinwall after the game, he said: “Myself and the team are absolutely buzzing to get into a World Cup semi-final. It’s what we wanted to achieve at the start of tournament and now we are in one, it is a bit surreal to be there and to be in with a chance of winning the World Cup."

England have now made it four wins from four in the tournament: “We have tried to just nail our basics and stick to our plans that we have set before each game," Aspinwall said. "We have aimed to be aggressive with bat and ball, while playing with confidence. Now, it is a case of keeping this up and not getting complacent with what we are doing well."

Aspinwall has taken three wickets in the tournament and speaking about his experience so far he said: “I have found this tournament very enjoyable, it’s hard not to when you are winning games. I have learnt a lot, and it is amazing to be playing against the best players in the world at your age. Obviously I would like to put in a big performance before this tournament ends, as I still feel I have more to give with bat and ball."

Aspinwall’s fellow Lancashire teammates George Bell and Josh Boyden have joined him in England's XI throughout the tournament. In last week's quarter-final, Boyden took figures of 2-31 removing both South Africa’s openers, while Bell was there at the end of the run chase to see England home and finish the game scoring 9*.

Aspinwall said: “It’s been brilliant playing alongside Josh and George. We have been playing together for a few years now. It’s fantastic to have three players from the same county in the eleven, it is a testament to the coaches at Lancashire developing us."
