Player Profile

Sophie Ecclestone, who hails from Helsby, started her cricketing journey playing for Alvanley CC and was selected for Cheshire girls under 13’s at the age of 9. After progressing through the under 15s and under 17s sides the slow, left-arm orthodox spinner, renowned for her accuracy and economy, made her Cheshire debut in 2013 before joining the Lancashire Women set-up in 2015, making her Red Rose debut in a Division One match against Notts aged sixteen.

By then Sophie had been selected for the England Women’s Development Programme and progressed through to the England Women’s Academy Winter Squad in 2016 after completing two successful tours of Sri Lanka with a Spin Camp and a Tri-Series with Sri Lanka A and Australia A taking 16 wickets.

Sophie made her full England debut aged seventeen in 2016 against Pakistan in a T20 International at Bristol, playing in two of the three-match series with England winning 3-0, and won the ODI series in Jamaica against the West Indies the following winter.

Last winter Sophie made her Test debut, taking three wickets against Australia, and was a regular in the side in the drawn Ashes Series. She is now set for the England tour to India in March & April.

Having gained promotion from Division Two in 2016, Sophie enjoyed double success last year as Lancashire clinched a Royal London One-Day Cup and NatWest T20 title ‘double’, with her 6-12 in the title-clinching Royal London match against Warwickshire the best in the competition, as were her 27 wickets at an average of just 6.96. At the end of the season she was named the LCB Young Player of the Year.
