SECOND XI MATCH REPORT: Lancs press home advantage against Notts
Lancashire’s bowlers backed up the first day efforts with the bat by bowling Nottinghamshire out for 247 to establish a lead of 179 runs by the close of day two.
Tom Aspinwall, Danny Lamb, Charlie Barnard and Harry Birkman each claimed two wickets apiece to establish a significant first innings lead before bad light brought an early finish.
Resuming on 422-9, Barnard added four runs to the total before edging the sixth ball of the morning from James Hayes to first slip to be last out for 55.
That dismissal gave the Nottinghamshire pace bowler figures of 5-105 and also left Jack Carney unbeaten on 86.
Red Rose skipper Josh Boyden struck an early blow, having left hander Ben Martindale lbw for 18, two balls after play had resumed following a ten-minute rain delay.
Lamb next took two wickets in three balls with both Dane Schadendorf (via a glove attempting a pull after making 12) and left hander Freddie McCann (nicking a ball that left him off the pitch) giving catches to wicketkeeper Matty Hurst.
That left Nottinghamshire on 56-3 and home skipper Tom Loten and Sam King had doubled the score before Loten edged behind off Birkman for 36 seven overs into the afternoon session.
King had driven the ball effectively, reaching an 88-ball half century from his ninth boundary, but he was cleaned up by a fabulous leg stump yorker from Aspinwall for 51 that saw the batter tumble over attempting to jab the bat down close to his toes.
Sam Seecharan and Fateh Singh rallied the home side with a 66-run partnership for the sixth wicket, Singh belting a couple of sixes in his innings of 45.
It was left arm spinner Barnard who made the breakthrough, trapping Seecharan lbw for 36, as the last five Nottinghamshire wickets fell for 49 runs.
Singh drove Birkman to Kesh Fonseka at extra cover, Bryon Hatton-Lowe edged behind for 12 off Aspinwall and Barnard claimed a second lbw trapping Farhan Ahmed for 7.
The Nottinghamshire innings ended on 247 when Hayes was late setting off for a quick single and run out by Arav Shetty’s accurate throw from cover point.
That handed Lancashire a lead of 179 runs, but bad light then prevented any further play with 104 overs to be bowled tomorrow to make up some of the time lost.
