Emirates Old Trafford's Library renamed as the Tyldesley Suite
Emirates Old Trafford’s Library located in the Members’ Pavilion has been officially renamed as the Tyldesley Suite.
The name Tyldesley resonates loudly in Lancashire’s history with two sets of brothers representing the county between 1895 and 1936 with three going on to play for England. There were the Roe Green brothers, Johnny and Ernest, and four Westhoughton brothers, Billy, Jimmy, Dick, and Harry.
The original Tyldesley Suite, opened in 1962, commemorated all of them and following its demolition in 2010 the Club have now decided to rename the Library room, which is situated in the Pavilion as the ‘Tyldesley Suite’.
Johnny played 507 matches for Lancashire - a figure exceeded only by his brother Ernest and Jack Sharp - Johnny scored 31,949 runs, second only to Ernest. A Championship title winner in 1904, he scored 13 double centuries for Lancashire and holds the county record for most first-class runs in a season, 2,633 in 1901.
Ernest represented Lancashire from 1909 until 1936 scoring 38,874 runs for an average of 45.46 from 573 matches meaning the brothers from Roe Green are the two players with the highest total of first-class runs in Lancashire’s history.
The Tyldesley Suite is located on the first floor of the Members’ Pavilion and combines the heritage, history, and atmosphere of Emirates Old Trafford, while offering fantastic views of the pitch.
Lancashire Cricket’s Heritage Committee meets regularly at Emirates Old Trafford and consists of former players, club officials and volunteers who discuss events such as the Hall of Fame and the ongoing Heritage Experience project which will be located within the New Development.
Rev. Malcolm Lorimer, Club Historian at Lancashire Cricket said: “We are hugely proud of our history and heritage at Lancashire Cricket and we are delighted to restore the name of the Tyldesley Suite within the Members’ Pavilion.
“The Tyldesley name is synonymous with the Club and has made a huge contribution to our history throughout a number of different periods of time.
“The Heritage team continues to work closely with the Club to continue to celebrate our past and make this more visible around Emirates Old Trafford.”
