Sefton-born speedster Ollie Sutton has signed his maiden professional contract ahead of the 2025 season.
Left-arm seamer Sutton played one game for Lancashire last summer, a Metro Bank One-Day Cup clash with Kent at Blackpool, and it was eventful to say the least.
The now 25-year-old only bowled four balls, including a wide first up. He took a wicket with his first ball before pulling up with a side injury which ruled him out for the rest of the summer.
However, the Red Rose management had seen enough of him in training to know that he was well worth investing in. And, having worked his way back to fitness, the future is bright for this homegrown talent.
Sutton, a product of the Formby club, played age-group cricket for Lancashire, though he had to be patient for his chance.
He has played second-team cricket for Derbyshire, Durham, Worcestershire and Warwickshire in recent seasons, as well as Lancashire, as he looked for a breakthrough into the pro game. He played for both the Red Rose and the Bears last season.
Thankfully, that patience has been rewarded.
He claimed an eye-catching 7-73 for Formby in a Liverpool Competition game against Leigh the summer before last and claimed 3-29 from four overs in a second-team T20 for Lancashire against Leicestershire at Grace Road last July, three weeks before his first-team opportunity.
Upon signing his maiden professional contract in late October, Sutton described it as a “proud day for me and my family”.
His resilience and determination to succeed has certainly been highlighted by his recent injury setback, and Lancashire’s director of cricket performance Mark Chilton pointed to that attitude as well as his skills with the ball.
Former county captain Chilton added: “We are excited by the left-arm pace option he can add to our attack.”
