Steven Croft and Dane Vilas have come out after tea with some positive intent, attacking spinner Harmer in particular with Vilas thumping one six over long-on and Croft sweeping effectively.

But that shot has proved to be Croft’s undoing after when he was on 39, top edging Harmer to Sam Cook at backward square leg to end a fruitful partnership of 78 runs with Vilas for the fourth wicket.

We've had to wait 20 overs and one ball for a boundary in this innings, and two arrive in one over!

On both occasions Josh Bohannon drove Simon Harmer through the covers to the fence.

But as Bohannon and Luke Wells have demonstrated during the last hour, it's survival that is currently the main aim rather than runs.

Lancashire 2nd innings 10-1 (following-on), trail by 278 runs, Wells 5 Bohannon 1
Luke Wells and Josh Bohannon are putting up some determined resistance as Essex hunt a second wicket.

Simon Harmer has come and immediately dropped on to a good length bowling two maidens. Somewhat ominously the spinner has also found some bounce and turn to trouble the batsmen.

Into the afternoon and Keaton Jennings loses his leg stump to Jamie Porter. Not the start we wanted!
