Luke Wood and James Anderson survive to the close and we will be back tomorrow!

Two more wickets have gone!

Tom Bailey has pulled Sam Cook to deep backward square and Hassan Ali has hit Simon Harmer to deep midwicket and this game is nearly done.

Harmer now has 5-85.

Matt Parkinson is the latest to depart caught by Browne off Harmer for 5.

Dane Vilas goes to his half century by driving the 79th ball he has faced to the long-on boundary and then drives Harmer through extra cover for four more. Well batted skipper!

Steven Croft and Dane Vilas have come out after tea with some positive intent, attacking spinner Harmer in particular with Vilas thumping one six over long-on and Croft sweeping effectively.

But that shot has proved to be Croft’s undoing after when he was on 39, top edging Harmer to Sam Cook at backward square leg to end a fruitful partnership of 78 runs with Vilas for the fourth wicket.

Dane Vilas gets after Harmer again driving for four through cover and this pair have posted their fifty partnership off 107 balls.

Steven Croft then flicks Jamie Porter for four to square leg.

Dane Vilas thumps a six over long-on off Simon Harmer and has got into his stride quickly since tea.

Some good positive cricket from the Lancashire skipper.

Steven Croft and Dane Vilas continue to defy the Essex twin spin attack of Harmer and Critchley as we reach tea.

Oh no! Luke Wells holds his head in hands after pulling a short ball from Sam Cook straight to Paul Walter at square leg for 19.

Wells had battled hard for 97 balls over two hours and was so disappointed with that dismissal.

We've had to wait 20 overs and one ball for a boundary in this innings, and two arrive in one over!

On both occasions Josh Bohannon drove Simon Harmer through the covers to the fence.

But as Bohannon and Luke Wells have demonstrated during the last hour, it's survival that is currently the main aim rather than runs.

Luke Wells and Josh Bohannon are putting up some determined resistance as Essex hunt a second wicket.

Simon Harmer has come and immediately dropped on to a good length bowling two maidens. Somewhat ominously the spinner has also found some bounce and turn to trouble the batsmen.

Into the afternoon and Keaton Jennings loses his leg stump to Jamie Porter. Not the start we wanted!

The morning sunshine has gone to be replaced by some heavy cloud cover.

Luke Wells and Keaton Jennings get through four overs to lunch without mishap, and they will resume after the break with 72 overs left in the day due to the extension of play to 6.30pm.

The final wicket falls as Matt Parkinson sweeps high to deep midwicket and is caught by sub fielder Aaron Beard off Simon Harmer for 14.

Lancashire are going to be following on 288 runs behind with just over ten minutes to bat before lunch, which today is at 1.10pm.

So far, so good for Lancashire in this first thirty minutes of play.

Luke Wood has driven Sam Cook through mid-off for his second boundary of the morning but Cook has three slips, gully and point all waiting for any mistakes as the visitors hunt a breakthrough.

Play starting in bright sunshine now with Jamie Porter and Sam Cook starting the Essex attack.

Luke Wood drives the sixth ball of the day emphatically through midwicket for four to get off the mark.

We have a dry but cloudy morning at Emirates Old Trafford ahead of day three of our LV= Insurance County Championship match with Essex.

Lancashire will resume their first innings on 32-5 , struggling after the visitor's bowlers made significant inroads during the afternoon yesterday after their batting effort had posted a total of 391.

Phil Salt and Luke Wood are the not out batsman who face the tough task of rescuing the innings when play resumes at eleven o'clock.

Play today is 104 overs with lunch at 1.10pm and tea at 4pm.
