Rain ruins Royal London Cup opener

Rain ruins Royal London Cup opener

Rain prevented any play being possible at Sedbergh School with Lancashire’s Royal London Cup opener with Essex finally abandoned at 2.30pm.

Heavy overnight rain had left pools of water on the covers and the outfield saturated, and although a brighter morning had allowed the groundstaff time to work on the outfield, further rain early in the afternoon delayed any chance of play.

Umpires Steve O’Shaughnessy and Phil Mustard made inspections at 1.30pm and 2.30pm before deciding conditions had not improved sufficiently to allow play.

Both teams take one point from the match and Lancashire now travel to York for Thursday’s Royal London Cup Roses encounter with Yorkshire.

“It’s very disappointing we’ve not had a game,” said Lancashire Second XI Head Coach Karl Krikken.

“The groundstaff tried their hardest to get it going, but it’s very wet in places.

“19mm of rain have fallen over the last 24 hours and that’s a hell of a lot.

“Unfortunately it was just too much for ground to take.

“We struggled to play on Sunday against Cumberland and they did well to get that game on.

“So it’s just been one of those things. A bridge too far.”

"It's frustrating when you see other teams playing but we've got another seven games to compete in.

"The lads had a good practice yesterday - which is rather ironic given it would have been a good day to play - so they've had a bit of a hit and got their bowling legs on, so they've done well in the time they've had here."

And Kirkken had words of consolation for the staff and officials at Sedbergh.

"The school have been magnificent," he said.

"The facilities here are second to none. They've even got the big blotter to take the water off.

"Unfortunately it has just been too wet today."
