Remembrance Day: Peter Eckersley

Remembrance Day: Peter Eckersley

This Remembrance Day, Lancashire Cricket is remembering Peter Eckersley, who was the only Lancashire cricketer killed during the Second World War.

Earlier this summer, a Peter Eckersley Memorial was unveiled at Emirates Old Trafford during the lunch break on Day Two of Lancashire's match against Yorkshire in the LV= Insurance County Championship.

Located in the tunnel underneath the Pavilion, Eckersley's name is now immortalised at the home of Lancashire Cricket. The ceremony was attended by Will Eckersley, grandson of Peter, as well as the family of Sydney Snow.

A former Captain of the Red Rose, Eckersley represented the Club for over 11 seasons, leading Lancashire to two County Championship titles before becoming M.P for Manchester Exchange in 1935.

Due to his membership of the Lancashire Aero Club, Eckersley was known as the ‘Flying Cricketer’ and once flew the Lancashire team to an away fixture.

He joined the Fleet Air Arm at the outbreak of World War Two and was based at HMS Raven where he was in training.

Eckersley was killed in a flying accident along with trainee gunner Sidney Snow whilst on active service.

His plane crashed at Worthy Down, Winchester on August 13 in 1940.
