DAY 2 REPORT

Hampshire 2nd inns 119-1 (40 overs) trail by 113 runs. Middleton 44 Gubbins 45

That's it for today. We will return at 11am tomorrow to see if Lancashire can push for a first Championship win this season.

A couple of 'nearly' moments for Lancashire with five overs to go. 

fletcha Middleton edges George Balderson with the ball just landing inches in front of Daryl Mitchell at first slip.

Then Dane Vilas from cover hit the stumps at the bowler's end but the batsman had just made his ground. risky single though at this stage of the game.

Still Lancashire look for a breakthrough as we head towards the end of the day. There's still time for that to happen with nine overs left.

The Red Rose attack are working hard to unsettle two set batters who have taken a fair chunk out of Lancashire's first innings lead.

Hampshire duo Fletcha Middleton and Nick Gubbins are providing sterner resistance second time around.

Dane Vilas is rotating his attack as Lancashire hunt a second wicket, are there are still 23 overs to go today so it looks like play will continue until about 7pm.

Tom Bailey makes the breakthrough as Joe Weatherley edges to Tom Hartley at third slip for 12.

Lancashire 1st inns 374 all out (90.5 overs) lead by 234 runs.
Felix Organ has a career-best 6-67 after Jack Blatherwick slogs the spinner high to be caught by Ian Holland for 4.

Felix Organ has a five-wicket haul after taking two in two balls!

First Tom Hartley slogged the spinner to sub fielder Ian Holland at midwicket for 5 and Will Williams was bowled first ball.

And Hampshire have another wicket as Kyle Abbott also gets an lbw decision to end Daryl Mitchell's fine innings at 68.

Mohammad Abbas strikes with the new ball trapping George Bell lbw for an excellent 45.

George Bell, dropped at second slip on 24 by the luckless Fletcha Middleton off Keith Barker, has pulled Mason Crane for six over midwicket onto the nets adjacent to the dressing rooms. Some hit!

Daryl Mitchell reaches his fifty from 64 balls, including 4 fours & 2 sixes!

Lancashire 1st inns 279-5 (68 overs) lead by 137 runs, Mitchell 41 Bell 17
George Bell drove the first ball of the afternoon for four to get Lancashire up and running straight after lunch.

He's moved on to 17 pretty quickly, just punching Mo Abbas through midwicket for four more as Lancashire look to substantially improve their lead.

1.00pm, LUNCH Day 2
Lancashire 1st inns 260-5 (62 overs) lead by 118 runs, Mitchell 39
Just like yesterday, a wicket falls on the stroke of lunch!

It's a third wicket for Felix Organ as Rob Jones pushes a touch too hard with his forward defensive stroke and chips the ball to Mason Crane at midwicket.

Meanwhile Liam Dawson has gone to hospital for stitches to the cut on his upper lip after being hit at slip earlier.

Rob Jones drives Felix Organ for four to take the Lancashire lead into three figures and Hampshire now have spin at both ends with Mason Crane coming on to bowl.

You daren't take your eyes off this game for a moment!

Dane Vilas is the latest wicket to fall (for 6) as Felix Organ spins one past the Lancashire captain's forward defensive push. 

12.20pm 
Lancashire 1st inns 222-3 (53 overs) lead by 80 runs, Vilas 6 Mitchell 21
The last 20 minutes have proved pretty eventful!

Liam Dawson has left the field after being hit in the  face when Phil Salt edged Mo Abbas to third slip who deflected the ball, unfortunately into Dawson who was also diving to try and take the catch. 

Felix Organ then took the wicket of Salt with his second delivery in the match when the batter edged to slip for 103.

Hampshire were understandably delighted with that breakthrough, but a bit stunned when Daryl Mitchell then hit Organ for 4, 4, 6 from the next three balls!

12.00pm - FIRST CENTURY FOR LANCASHIRE BY PHIL SALT
Lancashire 1st inns 197-2 (49 overs) lead by 55 runs, Salt 102 Vilas 4

Phil Salt glances Mo Abbas for four to bring up his first Lancashire century, and fifth first-class hundred, off 132 balls with 14 fours!

Well batted Salty!

A change of bowling does the trick for Hampshire as Josh Bohannon on 39 plays forward to Kyle Abbott but edges to second slip where Liam Dawson takes a good diving catch.

That follows a pretty good opening stint from Keith Barker who can feel slightly aggreived, having beaten the bat several times during his spell today.

Josh Bohannon dabs a single to midwicket to bring up the 50 partnership off 96 balls. 

Keith Barker is bowling to a 7-2 off side field to Phil Salt but then drops one down the leg side that Salt glances for four.

Lancashire 1st inns 152-1 (37 overs) lead by 10 runs, Salt 84 Bohannon 16
Phil Salt gets a thick outside edge to a Keith Barker delivery to take Lancashire into the lead, with 9 runs coming from the opening over.

Josh Bohannon flicks the first delivery from Mohammad Abbas to midwicket where the ball drops just short of Mason Crane, but Bohannon then gets underway with a strong shot off the back foot through cover for four.  

11.00am - Play resumes
Lancashire 1st inns 139-1 (35 overs) trail by 3 runs, Salt 76 Bohannon 12

Good morning from a very hot and humid Southport ahead of the second day's play.

Lancashire will resume their first innings on 139-1 (from 35 overs) trailing by only 3 runs when play resumes at 11am with Phil Salt on 76 and Josh Bohannon 12.
