Onions to lead Lancashire in the Metro Bank One Day Cup

Onions to lead Lancashire in the Metro Bank One Day Cup

Lancashire Cricket can announce that Graham Onions will lead the Club during this summer’s Metro Bank One Day Cup, starting on Sunday with the National Counties showcase game against Cumbria at Sedbergh School.

Onions has been part of Lancashire’s coaching staff as full-time bowling coach since 2021 following his retirement during the 2020 season after spending three years with the Club as a player.

With Head Coach Glen Chapple and Assistant Coach Carl Crowe both involved in The Hundred, Onions will assume the day-to-day responsibilities for the First Team during the 50-over competition.

The former Lancashire and England seamer will be assisted by Karl Krikken, who has held the position of Second XI Head Coach since 2021.

Steven Croft will also form part of Onions’ coaching team throughout the Metro Bank One Day Cup as Lancashire – led by Keaton Jennings – look to give First Team opportunities to a number of young players.

Following Sunday’s National Counties showcase game against Cumbria at Sedbergh School, the Red Rose will take on Essex in their opening Metro Bank One Day Cup group stage match at the same venue.

Director of Cricket Performance Mark Chilton said: “We have an exciting squad of players available to us during the competition, players who have been impressing and deserve their opportunity to step up and show what they can do in the First Team.

“These are players that Graham and Karl know extremely well from spending time with them regularly and they are well placed to lead the side, particularly after last summer’s success of reaching the Royal London Cup final under their leadership.

“This competition also provides Steven with a brilliant opportunity to expand his coaching experience and work with players on a day-to-day basis as he plans for the next stage of his career in cricket.”
