SECOND XI REPORT: Bowlers strike to put Lancashire on top in Roses clash
Lancashire’s bowlers backed up the excellent work from their batters by forcing Yorkshire to follow-on in this Second Eleven Championship Roses match at York. The hosts closed the day on 73-2 in their second innings and need a further 176 runs to avoid an innings defeat.
After the Red Rose had been bowled out 433 just before lunch on day two, skipper Danny Lamb, Jack Morley and Tom Aspinwall took three wickets each – after Jack Blatherwick had made the initial breakthrough – to dismiss Yorkshire for 184. Facing a 249-run deficit the home side recovered well from the shock of losing a wicket from the first ball of their second innings only to lose a second to the last ball of the day when Will Luxton was bowled for 44 offering no shot to a delighted Jack Morley.
Lancashire had lost early wickets after resuming their first innings on 370-4. The second day began with a wicket from the fifth ball with Matty Hurst caught behind off Matt Revis without adding to his overnight 21. Blatherwick was caught at mid-off by Ben Mike off Ben Cliff for 11 and then three wickets fell with the score on 402 to account for Morley, Aspinwall and Kurtis Watson. Arav Shetty (22 not out) and Charlie Barnard added 31 useful runs for the last wicket before the latter edged behind off Mike for 5.
That left Yorkshire with one over to face before lunch, but they too lost a wicket to their fifth ball of their first over of the day when James Wharton edged a seaming delivery from Blatherwick to wicketkeeper Hurst.
And White Rose wickets continued to fall after the break.
Lamb nipped one back to trap Luxton lbw for 7 in the sixth over of the afternoon, Revis edged a defensive shot off the back foot from Aspinwall that was well caught by George Lavelle at second slip for 19, and Morley had Yorkshire skipper Jonny Tattersall lbw for 38 attempting a pull.
Aspinwall forced Duke into fending a rising delivery to Hurst for 8 and Mike turned left arm spinner Morley into the hands of Watson at midwicket having made 4 to leave the hosts 91-6 just after the halfway point of the day.
Yash Vagadia and Dom Leech fought back with a 54-run partnership until Leech, having hit Morley for two fours in the same over attempted a third but missed badly with a wild swing and was stumped for 18 by Hurst. That was the first of three wickets to fall for 7 runs as Lamb had Jafer Chohan caught first ball by Lavelle at second slip and Jack Shutt caught behind by Hurst from a leg side glance for 1.
All the while Vagadia was playing his own game at the other end, having reached 49 by the time last man Cliff joined him. After reaching his half century from 52 balls the all-rounder hit out powerfully, launching an assault that included two sixes in a partnership of 32 before he top-edged a short ball from Aspinwall to ‘keeper Hurst having made 74 off 65 balls.
And Yorkshire made the worst possible start to their second innings when Wharton was out to the first ball caught behind by Lavelle, who had taken over the gloves from Hurst, off Blatherwick.
Luxton and Revis (18 not out) looked to have steered their way safely through the remaining 19 overs until Luxton’s last ball misjudgement capped a fine day by the Red Rose attack.
