SECOND XI REPORT: Lavelle, Carney half centuries boost Lancs at Crosby

After two frustrating days with no play it was third time lucky at as this Second XI Championship match finally got under way after lunch at Northern Cricket Club.

Put in to bat Lancashire made 251 with half centuries from George Lavelle and Jack Carney, with Worcestershire 59 for one in reply at stumps

Matty Hurst fell early for four having his middle and leg stumps uprooted by Henry Darley but skipper Harry Singh and Lavelle added 66 in 18 overs until Singh edged left arm seamer Oli Sutton to  Rehaan Edavalath at second slip having made 24.

Tom Aspinwall pulled Sutton to Kashif Ali at square leg for 4 but Lavelle continued to prosper, reaching his half century from 74 balls including 9 fours before pulling a short ball from Darley to Oli Cox at midwicket with Lancashire 101 for four.

Cian Dickinson drove and cut purposefully in making 43 off 52 balls before edging Matt Burton to Taylor Cornall at slip, adding 58 with Jack Carney for the fifth wicket.

Carney, who made an unbeaten 84 two weeks ago against Notts, added another impressive 77 not out that included some thumping drives and two sixes, the second taking Lancashire to their only batting point.

But none of the lower half of the order managed to stay long enough with Carney to build a meaningful partnership with the last five wickets falling for 51 runs.

Worcestershire replied with 59 for one from the remaining 14 overs with left arm seamer Joe Chapple, on debut, taking the only wicket to fall when he trapped Rehaan Edavalath lbw for 0 in the second over.

Taylor Cornall (29 not out) and Kashif Ali (30 not out) steered the visitors safely to the close to trail by 192 runs.
