SECOND XI REPORT: Mahmood among the wickets on a rain hit second day at Southport
Saqib Mahmood took three more wickets in this Second Eleven Championship match against Leicestershire on a day where only 26.3 overs were possible due to rain.
Mahmood bowled six overs on day one, taking one wicket, and a further 6.2 overs today as the players dodged further showers that have allowed only 56.2 overs to bowled in total so far.
The visitors had progressed their overnight 90-2 on to 189-6 by the close, brought about by yet more rain at 5.30pm.
Play ended just after 2pm yesterday and it was the opposite on this second day with the match not resuming until 2.30pm with one just ball bowled before another shower, frustratingly, forced the players off once again.
When play restarted a second time at 3.10pm it took Mahmood just five balls to claim his second wicket of the innings trapping Louis Kimber lbw for 38.
The England pace bowler then nipped one back to bowl Scott Steel for 10 and found an inside edge – well taken by George Lavelle – to dismiss Harry Swindells for 22, finishing the day with 4-28 from 12.2 overs.
Tom Scriven, who got off the mark first ball with a four to the vacant third man boundary, led a Leicestershire recovery from 125-5 either side of tea, adding 63 for the sixth wicket with Joe Johnson.
That alliance was broken when Johnson was bowled for 11 attempting an on-drive against Jack Blatherwick.
Three balls later rain forced the players off for the day with Scriven unbeaten on 48 and Nick Welch 1 not out.
