SECOND XI REPORT: Parkinson’s five-wicket haul puts Second XI in charge

SECOND XI REPORT: Parkinson’s five-wicket haul puts Second XI in charge

Matt Parkinson took 5 for 41 to help bowl Worcestershire out for 223 and put Lancashire in charge of this Second Eleven Championship match following yesterday’s washout at Kidderminster. The visitors then replied strongly to reach the close of day two on 89-2.

The Red Rose attack enjoyed a good morning with the ball after Luke Wood had won the toss and put the hosts in to bat, the seamers finding early assistance off the pitch to take four wickets before lunch.

Jack Blatherwick struck first having Rehann Edavalath lbw for 6 in the sixth over. Danny Lamb then bowled Olly Cox for 8 after the batter played on.

Tom Aspinwall followed with two wickets in quick succession, bowling former Lancashire player Taylor Cornall for 21 with a peach of a delivery that jagged back into the left hander’s stumps, before trapping Ben Cox in front for 3 to leave Worcestershire 51-4.

Kashif Ali and Henry Cullen responded splendidly with a 94-run partnership for the fifth wicket either side of lunch, with Kashif reaching his fifty from 83 balls when hitting his tenth boundary an hour into the afternoon session.

Lamb returned to make the breakthrough having Cullen lbw for 33 and Parkinson built on that success to bowl out the rest of the side in an outstanding spell either side of tea.

The leg spinner took 5 for 27 in a 61-ball sequence, first trapping Ollie Walker in front for 2 before getting the key wicket of Kashif, bowled for 87, in the sixth over after the break.

Mitchell Stanley followed, caught and bowled for 1, Adam Sylvester smashed 3 sixes in making 48 from 67 balls but was stumped by George Lavelle attempting to hit another, and Parkinson wrapping up the innings to claim his second five-wicket haul this season when Pat Brown sliced a drive to Aspinwall at gully for 3 with Worcestershire 223 all out.

Harry Singh fell lbw for 8 to former Lancashire second team bowler Adnan Ghaus when the Red Rose began their reply but George Lavelle and Matty Hurst responded with a 55-run alliance before Hurst became the seventh lbw decision of the day to Stanley having made 38 from 49 balls.

Lavelle remained unbeaten on 40 with Cian Dickinson 1 not out to reach the close with Lancashire well-placed on 89-2 and 134 runs behind.
