LIVE BLOG: Lancashire v Surrey, Day Two

7.00pm, CLOSE Day 2
Surrey 1st inns: 11-0 (5 overs) Burns 2* Sibley 5*
What an eventful day! With the wicket taking spin tomorrow could turn into a very interesting day.

Our match report and reaction will follow shortly.

6.33pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 202 all out (72.4 overs) Hartley 16*
WICKET. Nathan Lyon goes first ball, edging Cam Steel to slip to give the bowler career-best haul of 5-25.

Surrey will have 5 overs to face.

6.30pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 202-9 (72.3 overs) Hartley 16* Lyon 0*
WICKET. Will Williams gets his innings under way with a six off Dan Lawrence but he departs for 8 after eding Cam Steel to slip.

There are 7.3 overs left today.

6.10pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 188-8 (66.2 overs) Hartley 10* Williams 0*
WICKET. Tom Bailey gets a leading edge and skies a catch off Cam Steel that is caught at cover by sub fielder Ryan Patel for 3.

6.02pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 184-7 (65 overs) Hartley 9* Bailey 0*
WICKET. The wickets continue to tumble, this time it's Tom Aspinwall who departs for 0 after edging Steel to slip.

5.55pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 181-6 (63.3 overs) Hartley 5* Aspinwall 0*
Tom Bruce has launched a poor half-tracker from Cam Steel way back into the stands for six. That certainly left in a hurry!

But Bruce then departs for 17 after pushing forward and nicking a catch to wicketkeeper Ben Foakes to give Lawrence a fourth wicket.

5.38pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 160-5 (59.3 overs) Bruce 3* Hartley 0*
WICKET. Two in two for Dan Lawrence who traps Matty Hurst lbw first ball!

5.36pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 160-4 (59.2 overs) Bruce 3* Hurst 0*
WICKET. Josh Bohannon goes for 84 turning Dan Lawrence to short leg where Jamie Steel takes a great reaction catch.

5.18pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 150-3 (55 overs) Bohannon 77* Bruce 0*
WICKET. A bowling change brings immediate success as Cam Steel strikes with his fifth delivery turning the ball past George Balderson's forward defence to hit middle stump.

That ends a 57-run partnership with Balderson out for 21.

5.10pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 149-2 (54 overs) Bohannon 76* Balderson 21*
Josh Bohannon is going along nicely, pulling Lawrence to the midwicket boundary a couple of overs ago, and he has now reached 4,000 first-class runs for the Red Rose at the impressive average of 48.19.

Only Stuart Law (55.63), John Crawley (51.13) and Ashwell Price (49.49) have a higher average of players to have scored 4,000+ first-class runs for Lancashire.

4.50pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 128-2 (48 overs) Bohannon 61* Balderson 15*
It has been slow and steady going over the last thirty minutes with both sides fighting hard to gain the advantage. It will be interesting to hear the players thoughts on the pitch and the Kookaburra ball later because from here it doesn't appear to be doing a great deal.

4.10pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 111-2 (38 overs) Bohannon 50* Balderson 9*
Fifty for Josh Bohannon who drives Dan Lawrence for four through the covers. His half century came from 89 balls inc 6 fours!

4.08pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 106-2 (37 overs) Bohannon 45* Balderson 9*
Back under way after tea with George Balderson driving the third ball of the session from Kemar Roche through the covers for four.

3.40pm, TEA Day 2
Lancashire 1st inns: 101-2 (36 overs) Bohannon 44* Balderson 5*
That has been a good, hard-fought, first session in this match with the Surrey attack bowling a good length and line but finding it hard to get past the Red Rose batters, with the two men out - Jennings and Wells - likely to be disappointed with the shots they played.

3.23pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 93-2 (31.1 overs) Bohannon 41* Balderson 0*
WICKET. Luke Wells pulls a short ball from Tom Lawes high to the midwicket boundary where Dan Lawrence takes the catch to end the Red Rose opener's innings on 40.

3.15pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 90-1 (29 overs) Wells 38* Bohannon 40*
This pair continue to go along nicely, picking off any loose deliveries, but with Luke Wells surviving an interesting moment when he ducked a short ball from Jamie Overton that didn't get up. The ball hit Wells' upraised bat and flew over the slips for four.

3.00pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 77-1 (26 overs) Wells 29* Bohannon 36*
The 50 partnership between Luke Wells and Josh Bohannon has arrived from exactly 14 overs.

2.45pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 59-1 (23 overs) Wells 22* Bohannon 25*
Steady, careful progress by Luke Wells and Josh Bohannon this afternoon with the Surrey bowlers maintaining a good line and length in the face of some strong, buffeting, wind that can't be making life easy for any of the players.

2.25pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 43-1 (17 overs) Wells 20* Bohannon 12*
Wind stops play! We have had a 10-minute delay because the strong winds I mentioned earlier have blown the sightscreen sheet away. The groundstaff have now repositioned the smaller temporary sightscreens and thankfully play has resumed.

2.10pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 37-1 (16 overs) Wells 20* Bohannon 6*
Josh Bohannon goes down the wicket and drives Dan Lawrence through long-on for his first boundary, prompting Surrey to drop a man out to the long-on position.

It's a sunny afternoon in Manchester - but it is now blowing a gale out on the field!

1.52pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 27-1 (12 overs) Wells 15* Bohannon 0*
WICKET: Dan Lawrence has the breakthrough and his first wicket for Surrey. Keaton Jennings (on 11) drives a tossed-up delivery hard back up the wicket and the bowler takes an excellent catch low down to his left.

1.47pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 20-0 (10 overs) Wells 10* Jennings 10*
Interesting move by Rory Burns who gives debutant Dan Lawrence an early opportunity to bowl his leg spin to two left-handed batters. It's a fairly uneventful over and Burns then makes a double change with Jordan Clark coming on from the Brian Statham End.

1.37pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 17-0 (8 overs) Wells 7* Jennings 10*
After a quiet start both Keaton Jennings and Luke Wells have hit a boundary apiece, Jennings off the back through cover off Roach and Wells pulling Lawes through midwicket.

1.17pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 4-0 (2 overs) Wells 0* Jennings 4*
Keaton Jennings tucks Tom Lawes off his hips through square leg for four, the first runs of the season.

Here are the three making their Lancashire debuts today: Nathan Lyon, Tom Aspinwall and Tom Bruce.

1.13pm
Lancashire 1st inns: 0-0 (1 over) Wells 0* Jennings 0*
Luke Wells drives Kemar Roach to cover and the new season is finally under way at Emirates Old Trafford in bright, blustery conditions.

Roach dropping onto a good line and length straight away.

Four players are in contention to make their first-class debuts for the Red Rose with new Head Coach Dale Benkenstein having named a 13-man squad.

Overseas signings Tom Bruce and Nathan Lyon have both been included in the matchday squad for the first time, after arriving at Emirates Old Trafford earlier this week, whilst Tom Aspinwall and Josh Boyden are also in contention and could make their first-class debuts.

In fitness news, seamer Saqib Mahmood is continuing to build up his bowling workloads as he recovers from a lumbar stress fracture with new recruit Mitchell Stanley rehabilitating a knee injury sustained during the winter.

Jack Blatherwick - who picked up a hamstring injury on the Club's recent pre-season tour - is currently featuring in a friendly for the Second XI against Hampshire as he nears a return to full fitness.

Lancashire will also be without Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone, Phil Salt and Luke Wood who are all currently playing in the ongoing Indian Premier League.

Surrey
Surrey have named a 13-player squad for this opening Vitality County Championship match.

Recent history
Lancashire won our last Championship encounter with Surrey by 123 runs at the Kia Oval in June 2023 and the Red Rose have quite a good recent history in home Championship matches against today’s visitors.

Our innings and 130-run victory in 2022 was Surrey’s only Championship defeat that season, and we are undefeated at home since 2004 having won four of the eight matches played over the last 20 years.
